Yay! It is another week in Splinterlands, along with another share-your-battle challenge!
And the good thing is: It is about another monster I really like! But it is a unit I discovered only recently. How comes one might ask? -Because it is a unit less common on the battlefield having the "Epic" rarity. And although I opened some dozens of Chaos Legion packs already I was not lucky enough to pull this card. I bought it only a few weeks ago!
Therefore you should be the more excited for this review because I found it worthy enough to buy it on secondary market! (But then again this post's title might have given a spoiler on my estimate of the Magi.) ;)
As always my thoughts are on Silver league in particular. Here you encounter unleveled bcx1 monsters, for the most part.

So I bought the Magi from secondary market, therefore it must be awesome, not?
Yes, I think he is awesome
-because he has 2 Magic damage which is a big pro!
-because with 5 health he can survive on its own for a few rounds (thus it is guaranteed that he will fire some shots even if your backline is under attack)
-because it is a neutral unit! This makes him a lot more versatile than a lot of other expensive units.
-because initiative of 2 is still decent for a damage dealer and mana cost of 6 is decent enough, as well.
-because it opens a lot of room for combining with other "magical enhancers" (=summoners giving a magic attack bonus).
Now lets consider some flaws the Magi might have:
-Its availability is somehow limited. My situation is a good example: I opened a few packs, still I was missing this Epic rarity card! Buying this Epic card costed more than it would have costed me to buy the cheapest Legendary card.
-Cost to play of 6 mana is decent enough, but not dirt-cheap!
Let us try to bring the Magi of Chaos to its full potential in one of my battles:

Special rules here: Modern Format, 60 Mana Point Cap, Explosive Weaponry (Magi of Chaos is a blast!) and Close Range.

Obviously me and my opponent had similar thoughts on our setup considering the ruleset. We both used Earth Splinter and Obsidian.
But he went with a more defensive strategy while I would call mine more oriented towards offensive.
However that Mustang and the Goblin healer would be a tough nut to crack!

I have mixed feelings towards round 1. On the one hand I lost with Mycelic Slipspawn a rather expensive unit. On the other hand, so did my opponent. But now I had to face the opponent's Mustang which would significantly reduce my damage I could deal per round to the enemy's team. However the Venator did a good job in limiting the damage I received from blast ruleset.

Round 2 was Magi of Chaos' and Grund's time to shine, as well. Grund paved the way in two attacks, but was limited in its effect by the shield stat of another opponent's defensive units. Magi of Chaos however was not able to take the Mustang off the field, but the second tank with a whopping 3 (or a bit less blast) magic damage dealt.

So by the time we reached Round 3 the battle was already decided! Grund and the Magi of Chaos cleared the opponent's ranks and victory was mine!

Time for some conclusion! I hope you might have gotten an idea why I titled the Magic of Chaos a potential weapon of mass destruction?
We all know that magic attacks are quite strong. The Magi has 2 basic magic attack. Obsidian takes him to even 3 magic attack! With the right ruleset as shown above you get an incredibly powerful magic attack unit which is able to cope with even one or two hits. (Remember the 5 health?)
And all of this for the costs of 6 mana!
In direct comparison: Other monsters offer similar, but have either higher cost or have way lower health or are bound to a specific Splinter.
And I think this is what gives the Magi both incredible strength and importance. You can combine the Magi with a lot of different summoners and rulesets to good use.
Plus (as shown above) with a good combination the Magi gets even stronger!
It was another week with no Legendary Gold Foil card on my horizon, but you are very welcome to support my quest for a Legendary Gold Foil card by using my sign-up link: https://splinterlands.com?ref=jdike
