Perhaps for many people the term positive growth is unknown, perhaps others have the concept associated with certain situations. It is precisely because of the general perception of positive growth that I decided to prepare this analysis on the subject.

In popular memory are the stories (or fables) of the Porter of the whorehouse and the Microsoft janitor as perfect examples of positive growth. If you don't know these stories, I'll give you a quick summary.

They are about people who have always developed a stable and low paying job, when a new skill they have not mastered is demanded, they are fired. Faced with the need for income, they are able to identify problems in their environment and provide solutions and get paid for it. They manage to scale the activity until they become very rich.

These stories as a means of motivation are a spectacular vehicle, but they can tend to confuse some people. First of all, let's be clear about a few things:

  • Having a stable job that allows you to meet your needs is not a failure.
  • To achieve positive growth you don't have to wait to be fired or unemployed.
  • Positive growth goes far beyond the workplace.

To reaffirm the above ideas let's go to what the concept says.

Positive growth is the improvement, empowerment and building of personal resources and skills that allow for an increase in well-being. Therefore, we can define it as the development of our potential as people and the increase of our standard of living thanks to it.

When we see and internalize the concept, we understand that we can develop positive growth even when we are employees, either by acquiring new skills or occupying higher paying positions. Evidently it is a state to which every human being should aspire, but especially those who have their own business or company.

However, as I said earlier, it is not limited to the professional realm. Personally, positive growth can have a profound impact by allowing us to acquire skills that improve our social and family relationships. Helping us to iron out those rough characteristics we all have, to be more empathetic and to find improvements in coexistence and parenting.

Then it is time to analyze ourselves, see what we can do and improve, what new skills we can and would like to learn, and, above all, how this will benefit us.

This is the best way to begin the path of positive growth in whatever state we find ourselves in our lives.
