El libro que he leído lo elegí por el título, porque me encanta todo lo referente a la Antigua Roma y por un anuncio que me hizo pensar: “quiero leer esa historia”. Y ya la he leído, es un gran libro, está en español, por eso mi post es en este idioma.

I chose the book that I have read because of the title, because I love everything related to Ancient Rome and because of an advertisement that made me think: "I want to read that story". And I have already read it, it is a great book, it is in Spanish, that's why my post is in this language.

¿Quién es el autor? / Who is the writer?

Es un libro de ficción histórica, pero una ficción muy bien documentada y ambientada, y para ellos el escritor valenciano, de España, Santiago Posteguillo es uno de los mejores.
Ya ha escrito muchas novelas sobre la Antigua Roma y sobre algunos de sus grandes personajes como los emperadores Trajano o Augusto, en sagas impresionantes. A mí me gustaron mucho los dos libros sobre la mujer del emperador Septimio Severo, la emperatriz y madre de emperador Julia, ¿futura reseña quizás?
Pero hoy quiero comentar el último de sus libros:

But today I want to comment on the last of his books:

Principalmente trata sobre la vida de Julio César, el autor tiene pensado iniciar una saga nueva sobre este personaje histórico, uno de los más importantes tras 2000 años.

En este primer libro se centra en los primeros años de la vida del joven Cayo Julio César, el propio autor dice que hay pocos datos históricos y registros de esos primeros años de infancia y juventud, así que es posible que sea más ficción aunque se ha basado en el contexto de la época y registros similares para poder darle coherencia. Y lo consigue.

Ya el comienzo llama poderosamente la atención, un inicio imponente como fue después toda su trayectoria, aunque aquí descubrimos a un Julio César algo diferente. Con fuertes valores desde el inicio, pero muy joven, inexperto, inseguro, con ciertos temores incluso y al principio infravalorado por muchos, pero no por todos.

With strong values from the beginning, but very young, inexperienced, insecure, with certain fears, and at first underestimated by many, but not by all.

Descubrimos el papel preeminente de un personaje, de su madre Aurelia, una mujer con carácter y mucha inteligencia que va a ser siempre su guía y la que sabía desde siempre su destino, y siempre confió en él. Las mujeres en su familia fueron casi el eje principal, su madre, su mujer Cornelia, su hija, sus hermanas… aunque en la historia deja muy claro también que quién le marcó y la causa de que le marcaron desde el inicio fue su tío Mario, el siete veces cónsul de Roma, un inteligente y astuto militar con honor pero también con mucha paciencia y precaución, que dejó un legado y muchas enseñanzas a nuestro protagonista Julio César.

En el libro se intercala el evento principal, el primer juicio en el que César actúa como abogado (acusador) contra un gobernador corrupto que ha cometido innumerables crímenes, con anécdotas y situaciones del pasado que nos hacen entender mejor el juicio.

Pero también nos muestra claramente la violencia en las calles de Roma debido a las diversas facciones que querían el poder, como la clase alta no quería dar privilegios a los menos favorecidos pero en cambio otros políticos y gente importante (los partidarios de Mario y también César) abogaban por darles más beneficios y derechos a los ciudadanos de a pie incluso a los nuevos pueblos del imperios. Esta cruenta guerra parece interminable, porque los sucesores seguirán luchando por el control de Roma.

But it also clearly shows us the violence in the streets of Rome due to the various factions that wanted power, like the upper class did not want to give privileges to the less favored but instead other politicians and important people (supporters of Mario and also Caesar) advocated giving more benefits and rights to ordinary citizens, including the new peoples of the empire. This bloody war seems endless, because the successors will continue to fight for control of Rome.

¿Cuál es el mensaje? / Which is the message?

Creo que de lo que se habla es de la corrupción política, del comportamiento humano y de la burocracia legal, leyendo algunos pasajes de como políticos se quedaban el dinero de los impuestos, incluso los subían no para arreglar las calzadas sino para sus propios palacios, y mucho más, nos deja claro que las cosas no han cambiado y la verdad parecía estar leyendo sobre políticos actuales en cualquier periódico de España.

I think what is being talked about is political corruption, human behavior and legal bureaucracy, reading some passages about how politicians kept the money from taxes, they even raised them not to fix the roads but to his own palaces, and much more, makes it clear to us that things have not changed and the truth seemed to be reading about current politicians in any newspaper in Spain.

Sí, también hay grandes valores, honor y lealtad. Y lo podemos ver muy bien en un personaje también destacable, el mejor amigo de César desde la infancia, Labieno. Siempre a su lado, ayudándolo en todo momento y formando parte de sus vivencias.
