I have seen a new of those that I like the most, curious, surprising, interesting, historical, archaeological...
Did you know that there was a city that was like Las Vegas in the Roman Empire?
It was the city of Baia, "the city of sin" submerged in the Mediterranean waters (those that I like so much). Two thousand years ago it was a resort town south of Naples for the recreation and entertainment of generals, poets, and citizens of all walks of life... and even Cleopatra came from there. Julius Caesar or Nero had a villa here. Cicero, the great orator, composed some of his speeches at his bayside retreat, while the poet Virgil and the naturalist Pliny maintained residences near their rejuvenating public baths.
But between the 3rd and 5th centuries, and again between the 7th and 8th centuries, several earthquakes ended up sinking it in the sea, and now you can see the vestiges of it diving. Now at the bottom of the sea we can see the magnificent Roman architecture that still exists and resists under the waters.
A curiosity is that this city was called Baia, like the helm of the ship of Ulysses... (from the eternal literary work of Homer).
It would surely be a lavish city, adorned with beautiful and elegant statues, elaborate mosaics, as well as spas, palaces and temples. An ancient, luxurious city in an idyllic location on the Gulf of Naples, which became a unique city of vacations and pleasures. The sins, surely they lived with all intensity... so it is possible that it was a city like Las Vegas in the heart of the Roman Empire.
