Senegal have defeated Egypt 4-2 on penalties to win the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, and Saido Mane was the star player. The match went into extra time in Sunday’s AFCON final, after a goalless match at Yaounde. with the score 0-0 at the end of 90 minutes.
Senegal has become the first maiden winners since Zambia in 2012 and stopped the Pharaohs to claim a record eighth title. Two Liverpool stars battled for supremacy, as Sadio Mane and Mo Salah played their MVP role at AFCON 2022. Mane lifted the trophy, even if he missed a penalty in the start of the match. Mo Salah running down the wing ... but he fail to impress.
Senegal lost the 2019 final against Algeria, but this time they learned from the past mistakes and played a perfect tactical game. Senegal is the 15th country that won the African Cup of Nations, proving their current Alpha status along Egypt, Cameroon, Ghana, Nigeria and Cote d'Ivoire
Senegal didn't impressed in the group stage, winning 1-0 against Zimbabwe and drawing 0-0 against Guinea and Malawi.
The play-offs performance was at higher standards, winning all 3 games in 90 minutes and scoring 8 goals. Senegal won 2-0 against Cape Verde and 3-1 against Equatorial Guinea and Burkina Faso.
Senegal looked geared up against Burkina Faso, winning easily against the team that played 3 semifinals in the last four AFCON tournaments. Mane, Diallo and Guaye made it look easy for Senegal, scoring a goal each and showing that the team was ready to face Egypt.
I watched parts of the first half and I anticipated the penalty shout-out. The game wasn't boring but both team had an excellent defensive plan.
No big chances in the second half, as both teams played safe. Egypt had high morale for the shout-out, as they won after penalties against Cameroon and Ivory Coast. They weren't lucky this time, as Abdelmonem and Lasheen failed to score. Saido Mane had the chance to write history, and this time he sent the ball in the net.
Cameroon won the Bronze medals after an amazing comeback against Burkina Faso. I posted a noise in the 70th minute of the game, when Burkina Faso was 3-0 up and I was saying that the score was a surprise result. And then this happened .... Cameroon started the comeback... scoring 3 times to push the game into a penalty shoutout.
Aboubakar performance at AFCON 2022 was outstanding, scoring 8 goals and having a major contribution in Cameroon's success. Toko Ekambi, the other striker in the team, finished 2nd in the chart. He scored 5 times throughout the tournament and showed why he is appreciated in France.
