Telegram has been under scrutiny due to illegal activities on its platform. Specifically, authorities have noticed that some users are exploiting Telegram’s search function to sell illegal goods. This misuse has put the social media app at risk, particularly in India, where its presence is being threatened. In response, Telegram has taken proactive measures to combat illegal activity. A dedicated team of moderators, using artificial intelligence (AI) technology, has worked to reduce problematic content on the platform, and according to Telegram founder Pavel Durov, these efforts have been successful in significantly decreasing the amount of unsafe content.

To further address the issue, Telegram has updated its Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, stating that it will now provide regulators with the IP addresses and contact details of users who violate the platform’s rules. Durov believes that these measures will help deter criminals, although they have sparked criticism from those who fear that Telegram’s commitment to privacy and freedom of speech may be compromised. Critics argue that the platform’s reputation as a defender of user privacy is at risk, as handing over user data to regulators may lead to a loss of trust.

The situation draws parallels to a similar issue faced by Elon Musk’s social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), in Brazil. There, regulators demanded action on illegal activities, but instead of agreeing to disclose user data, X settled with regulators for $3.3 million.

Amidst this regulatory turbulence, concerns are growing about how these developments might affect the TON protocol. Durov has reiterated that Telegram’s search feature was designed to help users find friends and access news, not to facilitate illegal transactions. While Telegram’s actions may conflict with its vision of protecting free speech, Durov asserts that these steps are necessary to safeguard the platform’s integrity for its nearly one billion users. His firm stance follows a period of personal and professional difficulty, during which he was detained by French authorities and accused of making poor decisions regarding the platform. After his release, he vowed to improve the user experience and security of Telegram.

Despite the rising regulatory pressure, the price of TON has remained resilient, reflecting that these challenges have not yet impacted its market performance. However, there is a growing concern that if Telegram’s regulatory issues are not properly managed, they could have long-term consequences for TON’s value and the broader Telegram ecosystem.
