Last weekend, a friend from my hometown paid me a visit. We had fun, but unfortunately said friend, we shall call this friend Tall Person, lost their cardholder at some point.
We tried everything but we couldn't retrieve it. The silver lining was that the cardholder only included two easily replaceable pieces of ID - no need to bog down with the details - and only two bank cards - and again both were of minor importance because they were linked with accounts with not a lot of money in them.
Obviously, the first thing you do when you realise you've misplaced your cardholder or wallet is you start blocking or freezing cards so people can't use them, which leads us to the key issue here and the headline I used.
Because one of the cards was from Revolut, and the other was from a 'legacy' bank.
So guess what happened.
With Revolut, it took ten seconds: open the app, block the lost card, generate a new virtual one, add it to Apple Pay - Bob's your uncle.
With the legacy bank, you can imagine how it went. Within the app, you can block the card, but with that particular bank (and it isn't the only one) you cannot generate a new one, not even a virtual one. You have to physically head to the branch, which is stupid.
But the app wasn't working somehow - which is unlucky but also stupid, I use a lot of crypto and digital bank apps and they are never not working - so we had to call a number, which is stupid.
Also, because technically my friend was abroad and outside of the EU, the call cost a fortune, and no I couldn't call with my own number to make that particular call, which is also stupid.
Finally, they blocked the card, and today my friend's at the bank, as we speak, getting a new card.
Why are we putting up with this?
There are zero reasons to continue putting up with slow, convoluted, unnecessarily bureaucratic processes old banks employ.
It's unacceptable.
You can think what you want of technology, but whether we like it or not, we have it, so we might as well use it.
There's no technical reason why I should have to head to the bank to get a new card, there's no technical reason why wire transfers should take days, and I could go on.
At this point, they're just taking the pi*s. And we're letting them.
