Everyone of us has these type of days, that just call for an escape. Desperate need for a holiday, a job change or just a runaway from everything that surrounds us. It is not often as easy as we hope. Mostly, it is the money we need, from the job, to pay for any awaiting holiday. A rather cheap option, is the idea, of running into a virtual recreation of our dreams, hopes and wishes. Virtual Reality (VR) might be the next big thing, that tries to achieve this real world escape. And the project named Decentraland is aiming to bring this new technology, not only into the blockchain space but is aiming for mainstream approach as well.

For everyone that doesn't know what Decentraland is, it is a virtual world, holding thousands of land parcels, where each parcel can be bought with MANA, the token that runs on the Decentraland blockchain. Compareable to real estate in VR. Every land owner can build and create on their own land parcel whatever they dream of. There will be no limitation and everything can and will stay forever on Decentraland. For a short introduction, have a look at the video from BBC Stories.

Call for creativity

With more traction and further steps into the virtual world, everyone can join into one day, Decentraland is calling out for creative people, to build their vision on using land parcels. The creator contest started on 18th March and will run until 1st of April.

Pretty much everyone can participate and create. The builder is as easy as drag and drop and offers a variety of pre-build items, that can be used. And of course, every contest is awaiting with something to win. Not only do they offer their very own MANA token but also land parcels to win. If you don't intend to participate but to buy your own piece of land in Decentraland, the cheapest available parcel currently, costs about: 12.000 MANA (~ 838 USD). Prices can be tracked on their market place.

Let's build

The very first decision will be, how big the land should be to build on.

After that step, you can easily drag any offered item onto your land. Any progress will be stored within the browser. Useable items are categorized by Ground, Tiles, Nature, Structures, Decorations, Year of the Pig and HTC Exodus. The last category is the result from HTC supporting the creator contest and offering 2 HTC Exodus mobile phones up for winning as well. Besides HTC, the Bittrex Exchange and Coingecko are supporting the contest too.

Design wise everything is possible. Beach, street or wood scenes can be created in a matter of minutes.

The above doesn't really reflect all the possibilities, but it shows an insight of what can easily be done. I won't share my finished ideas before the end of the contest anyways. :P

As well I tried to resemble a privacy coin's logo into a garden scene. See the right sided logo for comparison.

I think it turned out quite ok, unfortunately I hit the given limitations of the builder, since I used too many triangles in the given space. If any of these limitations are crossed, the build cannot be submitted. 

So please be careful on the used objects and items.

Conclusion

The Virtual Reality space is often overseen by everyone. The current games and possibilities are fairly limited. With the approach of having an easy-to-jump-in contest from Decentraland, they are not only addressing Decentraland's fanbase but everyone that likes playing LEGO in a virtual surrounding. As I myself find it as easy to use. And of course the folks that like to win a share from the cake, have an incentive too. However, is it going to change the world? I don't know. Will it be the new experience, everyone was waiting for? Maybe. Is it going to be fun? Definitely.
