Five rounds into the 2026/27 Serie A season, the table is already developing a shape that few would have expected.
Roma, Inter and Lazio are level on 13 points, while Cagliari are only one point behind after another narrow victory. Milan have climbed to 11 points, with Frosinone, Juventus and Como all sitting on 10.
At the other end, Venezia remain without a point, Genoa have only one, and Bologna have yet to win.
The fifth round also produced one of the most entertaining matches of the young season: Roma and Inter finished 2-2 at the Olimpico after the home side led 2-0 at half-time.

Roma and Inter remain unbeaten

Roma looked in complete control against Inter during the opening 45 minutes.
Manu Koné scored twice, first in the sixth minute and then again in the 37th, giving Gian Piero Gasperini's side a two-goal advantage.
Inter responded immediately after the break.
Lautaro Martínez scored in the 46th minute and completed his own double in the 79th, rescuing a point for Cristian Chivu's team.
The draw kept both clubs unbeaten after five matches and left them together at the top of the table on 13 points.
The match also began with a minute of silence for Sandro Mazzola, the legendary former Inter and Italy player who died aged 83. Inter wore black armbands during the game.

Lazio turn the draw into an opportunity

While Roma and Inter shared the points, Lazio took advantage.
Gennaro Gattuso's team defeated Venezia 2-0 at the Penzo. Mattia Zaccagni opened the scoring from the penalty spot early in the second half before Tijjani Noslin headed in the second goal.
Venezia had previously missed a major opportunity when Mandas saved Yeboah's first-half penalty.
Lazio now have four victories from five matches and only three goals conceded.

Cagliari are no longer just a surprise

Cagliari's start deserves serious attention.
Fabio Pisacane's side won 1-0 away at Udinese through another Daniel Maldini goal.
Maldini took advantage of a defensive mistake and finished the move himself, giving Cagliari their fourth victory in five games.
The numbers tell an even more interesting story: Cagliari have conceded only two goals and have already collected 12 points.
Their only defeat came against Inter.
Maldini has also scored in three consecutive league matches.

Milan move back into the top five

Milan closed the round with a convincing 3-0 victory over Lecce.

Roma, Inter and Lazio have all collected 13 points.
Cagliari have four wins from five matches.

Juventus have recovered after an uneven opening.
Napoli, meanwhile, are already six points behind the leaders.
The comparison with 2025/26 is also revealing. Lazio, Cagliari and Inter have improved substantially compared with their positions after five rounds last season, while Napoli and Bologna have gone in the opposite direction.
The international break therefore arrives at an interesting moment.
