Europe is reshaping Android's AI future. Here's why Google's Gemini must open the door to competing assistants

Europe Forces Google to Open Gemini: What Android Users Need to Know

Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming the new battleground for the tech industry. While companies race to build smarter AI assistants, regulators are increasingly focused on ensuring that innovation does not come at the expense of competition.
That is exactly what is happening in Europe.
The European Commission has ordered Google to make significant changes to Android under the Digital Markets Act (DMA), requiring the company to provide competing AI assistants with broader access to Android features currently available to Gemini. At the same time, Google will also have to expand access to certain Google Search data under strict conditions.
The decision could reshape the future of AI on smartphones—not only across Europe, but potentially worldwide.

Why the EU Is Targeting Android
Unlike previous antitrust cases focused on search engines or app stores, this decision centers on artificial intelligence.
European regulators argue that Android has become one of the most important gateways between users and AI-powered services. If Google's own assistant enjoys privileged access to operating-system features, competing AI companies could struggle to offer comparable experiences.
Instead of blocking Gemini, the Commission wants to ensure that rival assistants can compete on equal technical terms.
This means users—not Google—should ultimately decide which AI assistant they prefer to use.

What Will Actually Change?
Under the Commission's specification decisions, Google must gradually provide competing AI assistants with access to a range of Android capabilities that have traditionally been reserved for its own ecosystem.

Depending on the implementation phase, competing assistants could eventually interact more deeply with the operating system by:
responding to voice activation;
interacting with installed apps;
performing background actions;
accessing selected device features with user permission;
integrating more naturally into everyday Android workflows.
The changes will not happen overnight, but they represent one of the biggest shifts ever required for Android's AI ecosystem.

Google's Response
Google has publicly expressed concerns about the Commission's approach.
According to the company, opening Android more broadly could introduce new privacy risks, increase security challenges, and potentially reduce the consistency of the Android user experience.
Google also argues that many Gemini features are the result of years of engineering investment and that mandatory interoperability could weaken incentives for innovation.
European regulators disagree, maintaining that competition and innovation can coexist when dominant platforms follow common rules.

Why This Matters Beyond Europe
Although these measures apply to the European Union, their impact could extend far beyond its borders.
Android powers billions of smartphones worldwide. Whenever Google changes core parts of the operating system, developers and hardware manufacturers often adapt globally rather than maintaining completely different versions for different markets.
Many analysts believe these new interoperability rules could eventually influence how AI assistants are integrated into smartphones everywhere.
The decision also signals that regulators are beginning to view AI assistants as essential digital infrastructure rather than optional applications.

Could This Benefit Users?
For consumers, greater interoperability could mean more freedom.
Instead of being tied to a single built-in assistant, Android users may eventually choose whichever AI service best fits their needs while still enjoying deep system integration.

That competition could encourage companies to improve:
AI accuracy;
privacy protections;
personalization;
productivity tools;
accessibility features.

Whether this leads to a better user experience will largely depend on how Google implements the required technical changes over the next several months.

Europe's latest decision is about much more than Gemini.
It reflects a broader effort to define how artificial intelligence should coexist with competition, consumer choice, and platform neutrality.
As AI becomes deeply integrated into operating systems, these regulatory decisions may shape the next generation of digital ecosystems just as much as technological breakthroughs themselves.
Google now faces the challenge of balancing innovation, security, and regulatory compliance—while competitors prepare for an opportunity that could redefine the AI landscape.
