They heard their parents talking.
Most of the time they whispered and that was exactly the reason why they went out of bed, stood behind the door and were eavesdropping.
Mother sounded upset and that was a good reason to worry and it made them curious as well. The eldest told the youngest to go inside with some excuse. The youngest was the most sneak one of them all and always showed up unexpected. It was a specialist in overhearing.
The little one was not very willing. Only three years old it wanted to sleep and not listen to what the parents were discussing. After one of the elderly siblings pushed it with a kitchen knife and told it he would slide his throat if he refused, the little one consented.
Satisfied the others hid in the hallway's closet and waited. The youngest went inside yawning.
"Mommy my tummy aches", it cried and climbed on her lap.
"Have you eaten anything wrong?"
"Nooooo", the little rat said and laid it's head against her breast and whined.
She stroke the tiny back and looked at her husband.
He nodded at her and left to the kitchen and put the kettle on.
"A cup of coffee will do us good", he said to the coffee pot. "A new life, new chances. No kids, no costs, no control, no worries."
He watched out of the kitchen window. The view, he would not miss it.
The kettle started whistling..
"Goodbye world."
He closed the curtain in front of the kitchen window.
A goodbye whispered was the last thing he heard before a knife was pushed in his belly. He sank on the kitchen floor as the light was switched off.
