As an individual investor, I have already been hesitant to invest in Bitcoin (BTC) forks like Litecoin (LTC), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), or Bitcoin SV (BSV) due to the advantages that these forks could offer, e.g., as payment currencies.
LTC, BCH, and BSV are all cryptos that have similarities to BTC but differ in various aspects. Here are some potential weaknesses of LTC, BCH, and BSV compared to BTC:
- Security: While LTC, BCH, and BSV all use similar security measures as BTC, they are generally considered to be less secure due to having smaller networks and fewer nodes verifying transactions. This makes them more vulnerable to 51% attacks, where a single entity controls more than half of the network's mining power, allowing them to manipulate transactions.
- Block size: BTC has a block size limit of 1 MB, whereas LTC has a limit of 4 MB, BCH has a limit of 32 MB, and BSV has a limit of 128 MB. While this may seem advantageous in terms of transaction speed, larger block sizes can lead to increased centralization, as only larger mining pools are able to process them quickly. This can also lead to slower verification times for individual transactions.
- Total blockchain size: As of today, the BTC blockchain size is 491.50 GB, whereas the LTC blockchain size is 91.10 GB, the BCH blockchain size is 221.59 GB, and the BSV blockchain size is 8,642,896 GB... While the larger block size of LTC, BCH, and BSV can lead to faster transaction processing times, it also means that their blockchains will grow more rapidly over time. This could pose a challenge for smaller nodes with limited storage capacity and bandwidth.
Overall, Bitcoin seems to be a safer investment than its forks. It might be the real reason why Charlie Lee, Litecoin founder, sold all the LTC he owned, beyond the official conflict of interest reason that he mentioned... However, each of these cryptos has its own strengths and weaknesses, and it is up to you to decide which one best suits your needs.
