How do You become irreplaceable? How do You prosper in this fast changing work environment, where almost everyone is scared to lose the job? How do you manage to stick out no matter what or how bad the economy is?
The answer is simple: You become irreplaceable by being an artist, You become a linchpin. This applies to every trade there is, even if You are employed.
The race to the bottom where the cheapest price wins is finished. Not only that, after this race the bottom is crowded and You and Your service or product wont be noticed amongst all the competition.
Art used to be for kings only but today art has come out of the museums into our everyday life. This is good news, because artistic expression makes is human beings singular. We now have to reverse the trend of standardization of everyone and everything, we must become human again, we must again become artists and creators.
The ultimate art in this day and time is to understand how to best serve the customer. We have many tools at our disposal to do this, but we must use our creative muscle to do so to make it sing.
It unfortunately is true, that our thinking as well as our education has turned us into obedient automatons, promising us a place and security in society. If You obey, You will be taken care of. That was how our economy has worked before globalization, and before this model broke.
Nowadays the low level jobs get eaten up by robots and AI, that is much better suited for many of the tasks humans performed until recently.
This is good news, because it highlights our inate strength: The creative imagination, our capability to create beauty. It is our responsibility to understand this and make the best use of it.
An important part plays the resistance, that keeps us from exposing ourselves, that is located in our Amygdala, the reptilian mind. All of us know how it feels, when fear sets in, and we find good reasons not to do something. That fear must be overcome, it is well worth it.
How do You overcome resistance? By daily practice and use of Your creative muscle. This truly works wonders. Because artists ship, as Steve Jobs succinctly put it.
Seth Godin gave me the best definition of art I have ever come across: „ Art is a gift that changes the recipient.“
This book is a fun read for all that want to excel in their work or profession, and the way to do it is to make better art. Business might as well be called „the art of serving“.
I want to finish this review with a personal message to Seth Godin:
Thank You for this most inspiring book, it changed the way I look upon this time. Instead of challenges I see opportunities and understand it is my responsibility apply myself in an irresisteable way.
Secondly I want to mention that You broke my highlight pen. I used it a lot to mark the most compelling parts of the book for later referral. It turns out You have done such a thorough job You broke my underlining tool.
