Extinguished candle with smoke, drawing in pencil

Inktober Day 2: Wisp

By DoctorPlatypus | Doctor Platypus | 2 Oct 2020

Today's #inktober prompt was "Wisp." I thought about all kinds of ideas, from baby hair to ink in a glass of water to something super abstract like fragrance. In the end I went with this extinguished candle.

Drawing of extinguished candle and smoke rising. Pencil.

Again today I found myself thinking very seriously about colored pencils and in particular today about using white colored pencil on a piece of dark colored paper. Really, the smoke in my reference photo is gleaming white, against a black background, and the candle itself is red, with glowing, almost translucent highlights. Still, I am pretty pleased with this, for a quick sketch.

Now that it's done, I kind of wish I had drawn a will-o-the-wisp hovering above the swamp. That seems like a larger undertaking than really makes sense for an inktober sketch in my imagination, though.

Thanks for coming to look!
