Re-drawing masculinity Figure Drawing Workshop - November 2020

30 Nov 2020 1 minute read 0 comments DoctorPlatypus

I took the figure drawing workshop "Re-drawing Masculinities" again today. It's once a month - very welcoming, creative, fun, and great practice! Here are a couple of my 15-minute sketches: You can find the workshop on Facebook and Instagram. I am s...

Too much pants

22 Nov 2020 1 minute read 0 comments DoctorPlatypus

Toward my ongoing goal of adding a bit of action, a bit of story to my drawings rather than exclusively do exercises and anatomical studies of shoulders or feet or hands or lips etc, today I drew this dude swinging on a rope swing over a stone ledge...

Ace of Serpents

19 Nov 2020 1 minute read 0 comments DoctorPlatypus

In college, I had this idea that I would write a series of poems inspired by imaginary tarot cards with suits like "serpents" and "fire" etc rather than rods, cups, coins, swords. I only really ever wrote one of those, and I'm not sure where to find...

Jumpin' fences

I have been practicing elements, and doing careful studies of specific body parts and slavishly copying photos, etc, and it is probably time for me to start thinking more about combining those elements into images with a little more story. With that...

Last post I had drawn a man sleeping on top of a yellow duvet, and I was not entirely satisfied with the way the fabric looked. Or, more specifically, I was not able to capture all of the wrinkles and folding in the duvet as well as I hoped, and in m...

No hands in this piece, because I am a little sick of them. Just some relaxation and a cozy quilt. I need to work more on how to draw fabric. When I was in college, my artist friends SWORE by fabric, because it was apparently so easy to draw, and th...

Entwined Hands

5 Nov 2020 1 minute read 0 comments DoctorPlatypus

Continuing with my study of hands, today I tried to draw two hands entwined. I expected the main challenge would be getting it so it was clear which fingers belonged to which man's hand, but I think that worked out all right. I think possibly the ext...

I've been struggling with the hands on my figures all through October, so I promised myself I would get in a lot of practice drawing hands once Inktober had ended. Here are three hand poses I drew today, on the way to learning to draw hands more reli...

Revisions after Inktober: Shoes

2 Nov 2020 1 minute read 0 comments DoctorPlatypus

There was a definite oddness in the workboot in the first version - I feel like it looked like a right shoe on a left foot, you know? So I have adjusted the angle of the sole and the shading on the side of it, and shifted the leather detailing to the...

@mmoren73 Yes, those are all pictures of my left hand in various position, but I see what you mean about the thumbs on the second two - I am still training my eye as well as my hand, and it's wicked helpful to me to have people identify places I can improve, so thank you very much! @Ariman Thank you very much, too, for your kind words! In the shorter term I am working on technique because in the longer term I hope to be able to draw the sort of complex scenes that I need to depict in a fantasy or scifi graphic novel page; currently when I try that, it's often very unclear what I have tried to draw. In the longer term, once I have a better grasp of realism and technique, I will be more confident deviating from that technique while still depicting identifiable objects.

I emailed publish0x support asking about this, and they replied really fast (two thumbs up for publish0x support!) requesting the original picture so they can investigate the issue. With luck, they'll be able to figure out what is going wrong (almost certainly something I am doing, but who knows - maybe it's a legit bug) and help me avoid it in the future.

Thanks! I did a properly recognizable portrait of one guy, but that was all in graphite pencil (so erasing was easier, less scary, and more reliable), and it took a lot more time, and I also consulted with his best friend to identify problem areas during the revision process, etc. The early versions of that one looked more like a fungous Jack Nicholson than like the reference photo haha. I really appreciate your comments and encouragement - It's a little scary drawing something every day and putting it out for the world to see, and your feedback really helps. :D
