Bearded dragon in pencil on a colored pencil background

Bearded Dragon

This week (when I demanded an assignment) my friend Kuniko said "I know! Draw a dragon!" and I went looking at dragons on the Google to find reference. Of course, because of the conspiracy, there are no photos on the internet of Actual Dragons, so this was bound to result in me copying someone else's painting, which I would rather not do, at least not for something I want to post. Those  sorts of exercises are very useful for learning techniques and such, but PublishOx seems very serious about not wanting you to post other people's work and I feel like copying someone else's painting and posting it here would be pretty close to the edge of that regulation. My friend Sandra was like "well, you could draw a bearded dragon or komodo etc - there are photos of those" and so I went back looking at the Google.

Turns out there are many excellent photos of bearded dragons, and here is what I drew:

I'm pretty excited about how it came out. There's definitely some stuff that could be improved, but I worked really hard on shading his head and chest, and on shaping his fingers and getting the spiky beard so it was not just a big smoosh of gray -- And on the whole, I am super happy with the results.

I hope everyone's having a great week!
