The Beginner's Trap.
When you start trading, the first thing you look at is your balance.
You earned $50 → "Great, this is easy!"
You lost $50 → "No way, I have to get it back now!"
The problem isn't the profit or the loss. The problem is that you're measuring with the wrong yardstick.
Measuring in monetary terms is like weighing your health in kilograms without considering your height. It lacks context. It tells you nothing useful.
The Rearview Mirror.
Imagine you're driving and only looking in the rearview mirror.
You see what's already happened, but you don't know how fast you're going, how much fuel you have left, or if you're on the wrong track.
That's how someone who measures in monetary terms operates.
You only see the past result (what you won or lost), but you don't understand how you got there or where you're going.
Percentages, on the other hand, are like the dashboard of your car. They tell you:
• How far you've actually come (performance)
• How much you can risk without running out of money (management)
• And whether you're on the right track or need to adjust your course (consistency)
The equation that separates professionals from amateurs.
There's a mathematical formula that 99% of traders ignore.
And it hurts, because it's what determines whether you survive in this game or not.
• A 50% loss requires a 100% gain to recover.
• A 10% loss requires an 11.1% gain to recover.
• A 2% loss requires a 2.04% gain to recover.
Do you see the difference?
The trader who loses half their account needs to double what's left just to get back to where they started.
The trader who keeps their losses to 2% can recover with the slightest market downturn.
The novice says, "I only lost $50."
The professional says, "I lost 10% of my account; that can't happen again."
This is a game-changer.
When you start measuring in percentages:
• You can compare your performance with any trader in the world, whether they have $100 or $1,000,000.
• You can scale your account without fear because you know how to manage risk, not emotions.
• You stop making decisions out of "necessity" (paying bills, recovering losses) and start making them based on strategy.
• Money ceases to be an emotional burden and becomes data.
Those who measure in monetary terms freeze up when their account grows.
Those who measure in percentages, even when their account grows, continue doing the same thing.
There are traders who have been trading for years and still don't understand this. They keep looking at the balance, keep suffering with every loss, keep celebrating every gain as if it were their last.
Money is just the echo. The real music is in the percentage.
Learn to read the board, not just the rearview mirror.
