Leverage is Not an Opinion.

By CubanCrypt | CubanCrypt | 27 Feb 2026

"Don't use 50x leverage on a market that's breathing hard."

There's a common misconception I see every day in trading:
...people opening trades thinking in terms of days or weeks, but using scalper leverage.
And even if they're right about the direction, the market takes them out prematurely.
Let's understand why.

The trap of fixed leverage.

Many traders always use the same leverage, say 50x or 100x, regardless of the market conditions.

That's like using the same gear in a car going uphill, downhill, and on flat ground.
The engine eventually blows up.

Leverage shouldn't be an emotional decision ("I'm confident today").
It should be a technical decision, based on concrete data: the current volatility of the asset.

The relationship few consider.

When volatility is high, price movements are larger.

If the price moves 5% in a day, with 10x leverage you're already getting 50% of the movement on your margin.
You don't need 50x.

In fact, 50x leverage in that context is almost suicidal, because a 2% pullback wipes out entire positions.

When volatility is low, the price moves very little.
That's when it makes sense to use more leverage, because you need to multiply small movements for the trade to be worthwhile.

The rule is simple:
• High volatility → low leverage
• Low volatility → high leverage

The timescale error.

Many people project in weeks but leverage as if they were going to scalp in 5 minutes.

If your goal is for Bitcoin to reach a certain level in 15 days, you're going to go through many micro-movements along the way.

If you use 50x leverage, any of those movements will take you out before your goal is achieved.

Leverage isn't an opinion about the future.
It's a tool to adjust your position to the noise of the present.

A practical way to think about it.

Before opening a trade, ask yourself:
• How much has this asset moved on average over the last 5 days?
• How much am I willing to lose on this trade?
• What leverage allows me to reach my target without a normal pullback wiping me out?

If the asset moves 4% daily on average, and you set a stop loss at 2%, you're trading within the noise.
You'll get pulled out again and again, even if you're right.

Key takeaways.

• Leverage doesn't measure your confidence; it measures your tolerance for price movement.
• In high volatility, use less leverage. In low volatility, you can use more.
• Don't trade with short-term leverage if your outlook is long-term.

The market doesn't kick you out because you're wrong. It kicks you out because you used the wrong tool at the wrong time.
