Bitcoin and Ethereum are commodities, the status of XRP, the native currency of Ripple, is not yet clear, the president of the CFTC says so

Interviewed by the online news channel Cheddar on January 13.

Heath Tarbert, president of the CFTC (Commodity Futures Trading Commission) said that while it is now accepted that decentralized coins such as BTC and ETH are comparable to commodities, the status of XRP (Ripple's native currency) is not yet as clear .

Tarbert's claims began to circulate rapidly on social networks, increasing insecurity and fear for investors that, if XRP was equated with security, thus ending up under the jurisdiction of the SEC, its value could easily plummet.

In the same interview, the president of the CFTC reiterated his positive position towards the digital resources market, noting how the institution he chaired has actively contributed to their growth; the CFTC, Tarbert is convinced of this, is gradually helping to legitimize the crypto asset market by helping to increase the flow of liquidity in the sector and working to provide investors with the same tools they have available on the futures market such as, example, price reporting and risk management.

Meanwhile, in the USA, the cases involving Ripple are still being sued, sued by some investors who claim to have been scammed and misled with the promise that the company's growth would find a match in the growth of the token value ; trivially, the question could be resolved, in my opinion, on the basis of the more or less decentralized nature of a currency.

In other words, it would be enough to equate decentralized coins to commodities while coins that refer to business-type realities, such as ripple, should be equated to security.

Obviously things are not so simple, however moving in this direction would mean giving regulatory certainty to the sector and thus promoting the growth of the sector, currently curbed precisely by uncertainty in terms of regulation.

The feeling, however, is that the US authorities prefer not to decide, and we know well how much ripple is engaged in lobbying (so much so that it has recently opened a new office in Washington) so it doesn't surprise us much; what will happen, in all likelihood, is that in the end the decision will be made in the courtroom and only then, given that the judgments in the USA make jurisprudence, the regulators will move accordingly, regulating the sector on the basis of as decided by the judges.
