The most secure crypto wallet

MOVE OVER TREZOR AND LEDGER, THERE’S A NEW SUPER SECURE HD WALLET IN TOWN…

I just received my brand new Cobo Vault Pro and in this article I will give you my top reasons why I consider it the safest crypto wallet of all.

I am talking about a super secure hardware wallet device that is in direct competition with the two giants in the industry: Ledger and Trezor.

This is a larger and much sturdier device with military grade security and unique features that include ..or should I say exclude the following:

  • No USB cable connectivity
  • No WiFi connectivity
  • No Bluetooth connectivity

And that’s a good thing. This really is a vault rather than a wallet you want to carry with you everywhere. This is for the serious investors, the type who keep quite a few Bitcoins or other cryptos longer term and do not want to compromise on their security.

So, what’s that like then? I’ll explain. But first, a little more about the device and how it came to life.

In fact, Cobo Wallet has been around for a couple of years already, so you may be wondering why have I not mentioned it earlier and why is it a big deal all of a sudden?

Well, the main reason is pricing.
The device used to cost more than $400 when it first hit the market and that was not even close to the price tag of Trezor One and Ledger Nano S – the two most popular devices at the time.
Since then we’ve seen the new models – the Nano X and Trezor T come out at around $100 price range and the new Cobo Vault (generation 2.0) is the first that can actually match that price tag, yet it beats the competition with a more advanced security. Hence why I consider it to be a worthy competitor now.

The first generation of this product was designed with the Bitcoin miner as its main customer which meant that, to maximise its durability the device was waterproof, had aerospace aluminium parts and a hardshell metal casing, all of which gave it military grade security (it passed the American military durability test) but at the same time upped the cost of its production and resulted in a great, but un-affordable product.

The second generation comes in a much lighter casing, which could be somewhat of a compromise on the durability part, but with that, the price is cut by a mile and you can get your hands on it for as little as $99 (for the Essential Version) and $149 for the Pro Version (this is cheaper than Trezor Model T in comparison).

The device, being noticeably larger than its competition, is more or less a smartphone size. Usability and portability suffer as a result, but it has evidently been designed for users that want a robust and long-term storage solution – especially for large amounts of cryptocurrency.

So let’s see why would you want to choose a Cobo Vault over the other devices on the market.

Security begins with prevention is their philosophy and indeed, the security element here is second to none. The creators of this wallet have gone to extreme lengths to create the most unique and secure device there is.

  1. First you need to authenticate the device on their website to ensure that the Cobo encryption chip has not been tampered with and your private key is intact.
  2. The device is air-gapped, meaning that it doesn’t come into contact with other machines at any point. 3G/4G, WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC or USB are not supported and therefore can’t be used as an attack vector.
  3. A proprietary bank-grade Secure Element ensures your private keys never leave the Cobo Vault. The Secure Element generates a true random number for your private keys and is vital to ensuring your crypto assets are stored in the safest way possible.
  4. Updates are done via a micro SD card inserted into the device and transactions are only possible through a dynamic QR code.
  5. Self-Destruct Mechanism is in place to protect the device from hacking attacks. If someone steals it and force-opens it, then tries to use a circuit hack to extract your private key, the self-destruct mechanism is triggered, wiping the device entirely. You can still use your seed and access your digital assets via any another device or software, so worry not. Just don’t lose your seed (that goes without saying).
  6. Touch-screen ensures that signing transactions and all other operations are easily performed.
  7. Removable battery ensures that there is no risk of corrosion damage to the device from the battery and a AAA batteries are easiest to find in any convenience store.
  8. Staking of your favourite cryptocurrencies is another great feature for any long term hodler.
  9. Bitcoin-only Firmware option is also on offer for those who consider themselves Bitcoin Maximalists – (the so-called KISS principle : keep it simple, stupid)

With that being said, I must conclude my review with the same bold statement I began.

Cobo Vault is currently the most robust, safe, anonymous and secure device for any crypto investor and I am a proud owner of the Pro Version.

You can buy one from this link. Currently the choices you have are:

coboessentialCobo Vault Essential – the cheapest option ($99) – it has all the necessary features except the fingerprint unlock and the self-destruct mechanism. It’s ideal for long-term hodlers who aren’t going to use it on a daily basis.

Cobo Vault ProCobo Vault Pro – the most popular choice ($149) – with all the extras and ideal for more frequent use with a rechargeable battery in addition to the AAA battery pod, fingerprint unlock sensor and an anti-tamper self-destruct mechanism which will wipe your private keys upon detection of disassembly or if lost/stolen.

coboultimateCobo Vault Ultimate – this comes with a hard metal case, the metal seed phrase card called Cobo Tablet (fire-proof and water-proof), rechargeable battery and all the other extras, making it this the complete package but at a hefty price and only for those who are really looking to splash big – $479 (this is for the whales really).

I personally think that the $99 is completely sufficient but if you can afford to go for the Pro version, that extra $50 is justified by the fingerprint sensor, the self-destruct mechanism and the rechargeable battery (which makes the device much thinner and lighter).
