Splinterlands | Onboarding 100 Players (Affiliate Report #2)

Splinterlands | Onboarding 100 Players (Affiliate Report #2)

I continue my quest to onboard 100 active players to the Splinterlands game and it has been 4 months since my last report so time for an update how things are moving along. I also have way more statistics on the retention rate and such...

I have multiple reasons for doing some effort in onboarding new players.

  • Affiliate Earnings I never shy away from using referral links if it involves projects I actually like and use or am invested in myself. Splinterlands certainly is one of those as I genuinely have enjoyed playing this game daily for around 1 year now. The game pays 5% of in-game purchases from referred players which have come in very handy to expand my own collection growing in the game. Since it's way cheaper to buy cards directly on the market and packs with DEC which doesn't count as a referral payout, the overall incentive that the game is currently offering to promote it is quite disappointing though.
  • Helping The Game Grow: Unlike most other crypto games, I see Splinterlands as something players would actually enjoy playing even if there were no considerable rewards attached to it. Right now, we are still very early on and the game can use every new player in order to grow momentum.
  • Helping New Players Grow: If I didn't know Splinterlands myself, I would love it if someone would introduce me to it so I could try it out for free and get a good early advantage from a monthly sign-up deal in case I would get into it.

So far my strategy in promoting the game remains the same. I try to have my referral link to be the best possible link new players can use when they sign up. This combined with regular blog posts on different crypto platforms also showing a very transparent view on what can be earned from the game (See June Report + 105.774$ | May Report +180.384$ ). This tends to have the effect of attracting players who come for the money but stay for the game. Overall it's working quite well even though I know I could do a lot better if I was actually to start promoting the game on gaming websites and forums. So far I haven't done that yet but might start doing it when the devs improve the initial user experience of the game which could highly increase the conversion rate.

From the data that I have available, I'm actually blown away on how many of the ones that ended up buying the Summoner's Spellbook keep on playing the game. That number is currently over 60% after 6 months. If anything, it really speaks for the game and from the personal feedback I have gotten, most are quite impressed by what the game has to offer.

This is the progression I made the last 4 months...

The percentage of players that sign up without playing at least 5+ games continues to be way too high and I hope the team managed to fix this by for example making some kind of walkthrough tutorial where new players can earn some loot chests by completing it.

These are the numbers since I started onboarding players from the last 2 seasons. I also included the total collection value based on the DEC cards that can be converted to so it gives a clear view of what to expect in terms in terms of season ranking based on the collection value.

Total Referral Earnings

When it comes down to referral earnings, I keep track of those in my monthly Splinterlands Results & Earnings Reports (See June 2020). Most affiliate earnings came from a handful of players who really got into the game. It's hard to calculate the exact earnings since values go up and down all the time. In total, I roughly earned ~166$ so far in affiliate earnings. I used nearly all of them to buy extra cards so I can improve on the sign-up deal I'm offering each month (See Below).

I continue offering everyone that signs up with my referral link and ends up getting the 10$ Summoner's Spellbook a win-win deal where I lease out a lot of extra cards which give a good early game advantage to blast through the early levels in ranked play. The full deal for July 2020 can be found here. I bought some extra Legendary Camila Sungazer Summoners with an eye on the deal I will be offering next month. I will be leasing 2 more of them out this month already to the next 2 that end taking up the sign-up deal. This card allows to instantly play higher level cards on all the classes from the get-go

Big thanks and shout out to everyone that signed up with my Link these last 6 months! I do my best to keep the card delegations in place as long as possible.

Important: Treat games in the first place as games and not as investment opportunities, Splinterlands allows you to earn some money and get good returns but you are much better off flipping burgers in Mcdonalds when looking at the money earned for the time invested.
