Recently, Dexaran initiated a fundraising campaign for DEX223 and has been presenting himself as "The Man Behind The Code," a title previously recognized by the Callisto Network community. However, following the events of February 16, where Dexaran conducted a rug pull affecting the Callisto Network community, the author of this series wishes to clarify that he does not in any way endorse Dexaran's actions or behavior towards the community.
Who Is Dexaran? — The Man Behind The Code. Part 3
Dexaran’s story with Ethereum begins from its earliest days. An early adopter and vocal advocate for the promise of decentralized applications (dApps), Dexaran was a frequent presence in the Ethereum community.
His technical expertise, particularly in the field of smart contracts, quickly set him apart. But it was the infamous DAO hack, a defining moment for Ethereum, that truly cemented Dexaran’s enigmatic status.
In June 2016, a vulnerability in the DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization) smart contract was exploited, resulting in the theft of 3.6 million Ether, worth around $60 million at that time. It was a devastating blow to the nascent Ethereum community, one that was likely to stop its momentum dead in its tracks.
Dexaran, however, emerged as an unlikely protagonist in this saga. Though he has consistently denied being the DAO hacker, his technical skills and ideological beliefs made him a prime suspect in the eyes of many. One compelling piece of evidence is a series of transactions linking his known wallet to the wallet recognized as the DAO hacker’s address. Whether or not Dexaran was the actual DAO hacker remains a subject of heated debate, what is undeniable, however, is his respect for the hacker ethos and a staunch belief in the immutability of transactions. It was this philosophy that led him to oppose the decision by the Ethereum Foundation to implement a hard fork in response to the DAO hack.
Dexaran — Ethereum Rebellion: The Dissenter Rises
For Dexaran, the sanctity of the blockchain, its promise of an immutable, decentralized ledger of transactions, was inviolable. His decision to support Ethereum Classic, the original Ethereum chain that remained after the hard fork, only strengthened his reputation as a blockchain purist. Dexaran didn’t merely support Ethereum Classic — he co-founded it and become a major contributor to its development, setting the stage for his future projects and his enduring influence on the Ethereum ecosystem.
Staying true to his belief in anonymity and resisting centralized influence, Dexaran founded the Ethereum Commonwealth, the third development team of Ethereum Classic. His focus was on addressing existing issues and solving problems unique to the Ethereum Classic chain. For Dexaran, it wasn’t merely about moving forward; it was equally about learning from Ethereum’s mistakes.
As to the question of whether Dexaran was indeed behind the DAO hack, we may never have a definitive answer. The blockchain, in all its transparency, still harbors shadows where secrets remain buried. As for Dexaran, his contributions to the Ethereum Classic community are undeniable. However, the ghost of the DAO hack continues to hover over him, a constant reminder of the Ethereum blockchain’s dark past.
Dexaran’s bold stance not only challenged the Ethereum community but also set the stage for the next phase of his journey — a phase marked by even more audacity and innovation. The story of Dexaran is far from over.
