Along with the hype of metaverse, many metaverse and gaming-related cryptocurrencies saw tremendous gains in 2021. One of them was Gala Games which has stood out to be a top contender for blockchain gaming and here’s why.
Centered on gaming rather than blockchain
Although blockchain gaming has started to gain traction recently, most games on the blockchain just aren’t good enough to compete with traditional video games like GTA 5, League of Legends, etc. Axie Infinity has some decent gameplay but players have found it to be boring and repetitive. Metaverse projects like Decentraland and The Sandbox lack appealing graphics and there’s not much to do in them. The current state of blockchain gaming is not at all impressive and this is why most gamers haven’t migrated to the blockchain.
Enter Gala Games, which aims to “make blockchain games you’ll actually want to play” according to their official site. Basically, it wants to bring AAA games to the blockchain and attract real gamers instead of just cryptocurrency enthusiasts. There is an immense potential for gaming in the cryptocurrency world and Gala Games could be the one to bring it out.
Not a game but an ecosystem of games
Unlike most other gaming-related cryptocurrencies, Gala Games is an ecosystem featuring multiple games. They are powered by Gala nodes and game-specific nodes. Currently, gala tokens and in-game tokens exist on the ethereum blockchain but will later be moved to the Gala sidechain. As of now, there’re nine games on Gala but only two games have actually been launched with another one in the pre-alpha stage.
Townstar
Townstar was the first game to be launched by Gala Games. Since, Eric Schiermeyer (CEO), and a few other team members were behind the development of Farmville in Zynga, Townstar carries a similar overtone. It also has its own token and game-specific nodes. Players can earn in-game tokens and NFTs through weekly competitions, daily challenges, and trading NFTs in Gala shop or Opensea.
Spider Tanks
Spider Tanks is a PVP brawler consisting of different game modes where players battle out each other using tanks that can crawl (hence the name). Players can earn tokens through skill-based competition, resource collection, and a player-driven upgrade cycle. This was the second game to be launched on Gala Games which was developed by Gamedia, an award-winning game studio in the Netherlands.
Mirandus
Mirandus is a fantasy RPG game with graphics resembling that of The Sandbox. This game is still in development but the pre-alpha version of the game is available to play. However, to be able to play at this stage, players need to purchase 'Exemplars' which are special game avatars. For now, there's no way to tell how well this game is going to do but it looks very promising.
Apart from these, Gala Games has six other games among which five are in development and one is pending node votes.
The website states that there are 1.3 million monthly active users of Gala Games as of now. With more and more games being launched, we might see a massive surge in players flocking to this ecosystem. This will be profitable for Gala token holders which is currently being used for purchasing NFTs and founder’s node licenses. In the future, it will also be used for transactions on the Gala sidechain.
So, if Gala Games can keep the promise of delivering top-tier games with play-to-earn features, it could very well make blockchain gaming mainstream.
