Coronavirus is a Dog's Best Friend

Pets are Finally Free to Roam the Earth

If you're like me, these days of self-isolation are bringing early-onset cabin fever. In other words, every couple of hours, I feel an overwhelming need to get out of the house. Yes, I'm staying at least six feet away from anyone I encounter!

Today, after eating a beautiful plate of Eggs Quarantine, I went outside for some air. The rain finally subsided, and the sun beaming through the window was too bright to ignore. It didn't take long to realize that dogs are absolutely loving all this newfound time to get out for a walk.

Now, you may be stuck with the unexpected burden of being a babysitter and a teacher, while still trying to work remotely. Good luck with that! I'm right there with you and can say that having a schedule is tremendously helpful. We have a giant whiteboard at home, and every night before bed, we use it to plan the next day. We factor in free time for everyone, and seeing what's coming next tends to slice the stress of being sequestered right in half!

But I digress. Let's get back to the canines...

Hop Into the Mind of a Dog

The sad reality of dog ownership is that some owners simply don't give their furry friends enough attention. Especially for bigger breeds, if you're not prepared to give your pet at least an hour of daily exercise, it's probably best that you don't even have a dog in the first place.

Dogs need lots of love and lots of activity. Now, imagine yourself as a hyper Dalmation living in a house with a pair of working adults. If you're a lucky dog, there's at least a yard in which you can sniff around all day.

But for the pups living indoors, you might just want to take another nap.

Can we go out for a walk already?

Have you ever seen one of those dogs that doesn't walk straight but kinda waddles side to side? I'm not talking about the graybeards; I'm referring to the overweight blobs having consumed too much Alpo. But now, with half the world confined to their living spaces, our canine companions have a second shot at getting back into shape. And that goes for their humans, too!

Think about what goes through your pet's head as they sit at home all day long without attention. Outbreak or not, get those paws moving!

Staying Healthy

In these surreal times of crowd distancing and self-isolation, mental health may be more important than physical. Which makes it especially encouraging to see so many people out walking the dog.

I've never, ever seen so many walkers, bikers, joggers, and kids roaming my neighborhood. We try to stay apart, and we're not really going to stores anymore and totally avoid large crowds.

Yes, these days are super-weird, and we don't know what's going to befall the economy or everyone's sanity, for that matter. While I'm stuck here, I'm trying to stay positive as I keep mostly to myself.

We feel like we're doing our part to stop the spread, but it's hard to contain anyone or their pets from venturing into the great outdoors.

I hope we all learn valuable lessons about ourselves while we have the time to reflect. Nearly everyone is being forced to slow down. And for those with an employer that had a Plan B, the pause offers a much-needed break from our hyper-paced lives.

Not to mention how corporations can finally wake up to how physicality isn't a pre-requisite to a job well done. In other words, so long as you're getting the job done, it shouldn't matter if you're at home eating rations or in the office eating all the free crackers and licorice.

I hope we all come out the other side of this roller coaster wiser and stronger. Stay safe out there, everyone. I hope you find all the paper products you're searching for!

Peace,
