The end of email

The end of email

By theinspired | Game of Life | 26 Dec 2019

Beginning Jan 1, 2020 it is my desire to no longer use email.

I know this is outrageous, outlandish, and many will tell me I am crazy. Back in May I wrote a post titled: "Why are we still using EMAIL?!"

I've noticed over the past 6 months that information I receive via email is old, spammy, or obtained easier via some other means. A month I begin communicating this to my network and I've found many affirming my decision and others disagreeing vehemently. How will you function without email?!

So, I will keep this post updated on my trials and tribulations with my exit from SMTP based communications. I currently have multiple emails accounts ranging from Gmail, Yahoo, Proton Mail, and others. I've put an out of office replies on all accounts indicating I will no longer use email in 2020. I immediate unsubscribed from all emails coming into my accounts.

In addition, I began sending notification via email (subject "This is the last email I will send you) that I will no longer use email and many said that's hypocritical, to which I responded umm it's the last email I am sending you. At any rate, I immediately noticed that a ton of emails bounced. Why? Let's see - umm the email is no longer valid. This is one of my issues with emails. People change them all the time and do not notify you. People change jobs, shift platforms, pass away, etc. There is nothing that update and notify you of these changes until you email them.

I also noticed that I am getting notification from my credit card companies (even letters in the mail) saying that my email isn't working (due to the auto response) and so I've contacted several of them and removed email as a way of contact for me.

Now one of the major areas of concern will be the use of email to login to other platforms and services. I guess I should have noted that my primary means of communication will be on privacy platforms like Keybase.io, Signal, Wire, and Telegram. I will exit Facebook & FB messenger, Instagram, and Google altogether; or attempt to.

Of the platforms I use many of them I had to sign up using an email. Well that's a problem right there. We need to shift from the use of email to either a mobile number or I'd love to see us begin to use Blockchain IDs for verification/validation. I've made an effort to only login to my email accounts once a day to see if there is anything of importance.

So stay tuned to this and I will let you know if this is a success - wish me luck!

Update: Just noticed that  you need an email account (Gmail) to use with Android based phones. Actually for any mobile device you will need an associated email to use with them. hmm.
