When Small is cheap.

When Small is cheap.

I guess we all have perception that buying big packets against the small packets will save us the money and in reality it is almost true for majority of item when big pack/family pack are costing less for per gm/ml of the goods purchased. But is it always true?

Personal finding 1

Recently, I went for purchasing my groceries and unfortunately I did not find my favorite biscuit in shop rack. So I picked up another one of the same size (say 200 gram) from the rack. I checked its price and look like it is of same price as my favorite brand. But suddenly a doubt come into my mind why should not I buy 100 gram pack (in case I do not like the taste of this new biscuit.) To my astonishment, I find 100 gram pack of biscuit is costing less. (for per gram of Biscuit.) . I immediately replaced big pack with small pack and saved little money there.

Personal finding 2

No this is not exactly cheap but a very well known marketing trick, lure the customer using sale. Actually there is a dish washing soap of 100 gram costing $1 and they also placed same soap weighing only 75 gram for $1. Anyone who will do quick glance will buy 100 gram soap but what they did they give 1 bar of soap free when you purchase 3 , so it will mean you are going to get 75*4 grams for $3, matching the price with bigger one on quantity. Surprising I again bagged this small packet.

What may be reasons.

I have some plausible explanation on this basis of my experience as listed below:

Small packets inventory is in high demand and move fast so big packets are become some kind of "convenience" and company charge more for giving you a big packet as it has to still produce them again faster moving small packet inventory.

In some case like shampoo sachets(or anything that is packed in sachets) it become "logistics" easy for company to ship them and save considerable cost against the bottles and jar that they use to pack large quantities.

One of the reason , I think small packing and low price attracts low medium group or poor people also to try their product. Giving sale on small packets might give the much boost to their profit as it will quickly escalates to boosting their sales.

Do you compare?

Ok, going to the endless myriad reason that causes small packet to be cheaper than large one is not exactly the point of my article. I like to know how many of us really compare between small and big packets while buying. How many really take a look between price difference between a sachet and bottle/jar price.
