I'm launching a new column: “This Day in History.” I will talk about the events that took place on the specified date. Accordingly, I will start on January 2.
The first photographs of the Moon
In 1839 the first photograph of the Moon was taken. Photographer Louis Daguerre took the only photograph of the Earth's satellite. By the way, Daguerre is not only a chemist and artist, but also one of the creators of photography. He is the author of the idea of creating photographs - daguerreotype. The bottom line is that a silver-plated copper plate must be treated with iodine vapor. Silver iodide will appear on the surface. Then the image will begin to appear on the surface. It is fixed by mercury vapor. This technique was used until 1951.
Unfortunately, the photographs of the Moon taken by the photographer have not survived. The fact is that the photographer's laboratory burned down. The fire occurred in 1840. But in the same year, 1840, a new photograph of the Moon was taken by the American John William Draper.
The first combat use of a helicopter in history
It was on this day, in 1944, that there was the first combat use of a helicopter in the history of mankind. Igor Sikorsky created combat helicopters. On this day, 3 helicopters of this type were used to escort the British Atlantic convoy. Subsequently, they were regularly used for similar purposes. Combat vehicles accompanied the transportation of military cargo from America to Europe. First of all, this concerned the transportation of ammunition.
During the fighting against the Japanese in the Pacific and Burma, helicopters were used to transport wounded people out of combat zones.
Memorable dates and holidays January 2
The world celebrates: Swiss Cheese Day, Cat New Year, Buffet Day, Pet Travel Safety Day, Inspiration and Motivation Day, Science Fiction Day, Introvert Day, Ice Cream Day and Prisoner Day.
Thus, 2 important events happened on this day. First of all, these are pictures of the Moon. In addition, it was on this day that combat helicopters began to be used. This is still important today. Quite often, it is these vehicles that have the final say on the battlefield. Next time I’ll tell you about other interesting events.
