3 DePin Projects to Explore as a Gateway to Crypto

Remember those old crypto "faucets" (FreeBitcoin, Moon ecosystem, Cointiply which is actually still running and a good source of income for me) that used to give you tiny bits of Bitcoin just for clicking a button, wathing ads or making some other nonsense action? In the meanwhile they (faucets) were selling ads on their websites, sharing part od the profits with users. Faucets were a first taste, an introduction to crypto, at least for me. While earning the first Satoshi, I was learning more and more about crypto and diving into it. I have the feeling that DePIN (Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks) projects might be the modern version of that, but in a way more useful. They are now what those faucets used to be in the past: the easiest, lowest-risk way to get your first crypto.

While you are not gonna get rich overnight—let's be relistic—but you could earn your first tokens easily, and more importantly, you'll become instantly involved in the ecosystem. You can move from being a passive consumer of the internet to an active provider of its infrastructure. Important disclaimer: DePIN projects are not for free, they are using your data, your resources or your connection. Most of them are legit, but you have to DYOR and understand what they do with you resources. On top of that, some of these projects are rewarding users with an "Airdrop" model, so nothing is guaranteed.

The Real Value: Infrastructure

The reason DePIN exists is simple: it uses crypto rewards (or future rewards in some cases) to incentivize users all over the world to share resources (bandwith, CPU, storage, data) that actually create value, while creating decentralized competitor for cloud services provided by big corporations. This isn't just a random coin distribution; by sharing resources you're providing a service that is useful to someone in the wordl, whether it’s sharing bandwidth, storage, or compute power.

Most projects look pretty transparent and legit, sayin' they use it for things like market research, running AI models, or optimizing content for delivery. This is usually done by routing anonymous requests through your connection. The major risk (at least from what I can understand, i'm not a full IT guy) isn't that they're spying on your personal files, but that an untrustworthy company might use your IP address for shady and unlegit things. So, always check their whitepaper or FAQ to make sure they’ve got clear policies on anonymity and data use. A good project will have this information on their website in a way that easy to find.

The Projects I'm Actuallly Using Right Now

I've tested a bunch, and here are the three DePIN projects that have earned me some crypto and kept me interested: Honeygain, Gradient Network, and Grass. They all work slightly different, so pick the one that fits your tech setup best.

1. HoneyGain

HoneyGain is one of the olldest bandwidth-sharing apps around, and it's the simplest entry point. Please notice that you'll grant a 10% bonus if you cash out via JumpTask, which pays with its own stable token on BNB network. Otherwise you can cash out via Paypal.

How I Use It: I run the app on my old laptop and my phone. You just install it, log in, and forget it. It uses your unused internet bandwidth in the background.

The Rewards: You earn Grass Points which were converted at the end of Season One in Grass Token on the Solana network. Rewards were ok (around 100$ for me): I kept half of the rewards and sold the other half. The project is still running and other season rewards are expected.

3. Gradient Network

Gradient Network is another exciting one running on Solana, but from what I can understan it asks for a little more than just bandwidth: computing power.

How I Use It: I installed their Sentry Node software. It lets my computer contribute its spare GPU/CPU power when I'm not using it for gaming or heavy work.
What It Provides: It’s building a decentralized network for edge computing and AI model processing. Think of it as renting out your computer's brainpower to researchers and developers who need it for complex calculations.
The Rewards: You earn EXP Points by running the Sentry Node. Again, these are currently points, not a live token, but they are expected to convert into the network's native crypto token (or an airdrop) at some point. This is a higher-effort, higher-potential payback project. Season 1 is currently concluded, waiting for further developments. I'll check back soon when they'll have news.

Conclusion

DePIN is the perfect gateway. You download an easy app or browser extension, you start earning a tiny bit of crypto (or potential crypto if the project is still early and is running a point system), and suddenly you have a reason to get a Solana wallet, or maybe check out a decentralized exchange. You learn the ropes with house money. You don't just read about Web3; you become part of it. Just remember to always use official links, keep your main crypto funds separated, and know what kind of data your chosen project is actually using your connection for.
