Candid Confrontation Couched in Couture

By mildandred | Afrogoth_AI | 18 Jan 2026

In "From Songs to Silence to Words: On Building a Body of Work and What Comes After" I like this candid statement by Smoljanović: "These spaces are treated not as stages, but as archives. There is no algorithm to please here, no trend to chase." This is similar to the Afrogoth content, especially the stuff on YouTube. It is an archive, a library, a repository of "the making of Afrogoth".

I also like this candid statement on the Freelancedao website: "Let's be honest...freelancing today is stacked against you." I have been a freelancer for most of my writing career and I can relate to the facts mentioned on the website and in "The Global Freelance Client Payment Delay Report 2025: Why 63% of Freelancers Wait Over 30 Days to Get Paid". Afrogoth will require the services of freelancers so it is important to outline the best practices to ensure that Afrogoth freelancers will have the best experience working with this global fashion movement.

The optimism and hope that Freelancedao is offering includes: "Own your data, profile, and income; Get paid instantly in crypto + Fiat; Get global exposure & borderless opportunities; Vote and shape the platform’s future."

Sadly, there are many similarities between freelancing as it is today and colonialism as it was in the time of Mekatilili wa Menza. Typical African reminds us: "Mekatilili wa Menza the Mother of resistance, a heroine from Kenya, who rebelled and fought the colonial invaders. She once said " I am not afraid to speak the truth and fight for my people. My powers come from Kaya, rooted in the spirits of our ancestors"

I also like the candid statement, from the same Smoljanović article, about angled mirrors. Mirrors are the ultimate candour contraptions but sometimes, as the saying goes, the truth hurts, so the mirror has to be slightly angled to lessen the sting, while not compromising on honesty. As Smoljanović puts it: "These narratives are not escapism. They are mirrors, angled just enough to allow difficult ideas to be examined without direct confrontation." One of Afrogoth's mirrors that allows candid conversations about colonialism, without callous confrontation, is "dark humoUr". The confrontation is there but it is couched in couture!
