Off-The-Beaten-Path Manaslu Circuit: Day 1

By pSub | Adventures Around the World | 15 Mar 2020

This is a series about the Manaslu Circuit. Some basic information about the trek fist: The trek walks around the 8000 meter peak Manaslu, starts at an altitude of 800 meters and crosses the Larke Pass on its highest point at an altitude of 5100 meters. To complete the trek you usually need about 14 days. You can sleep in lodges and your are mostly alone as the trek has only about 6000 trekkers per year.

After our arrival in Kathmandu, we stayed there for one additional day to visit the city. Kathmandu is worth a visit. Its a very crowed, dirty and busy city with many interesting people and sights.

Maybe one of the biggest attractions in Kathmandu is the Boudhanath stupa. A stupa is a mound-like structure containing relics. This stupa is the largest in Nepal and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Nepal is a country with many different religious groups living peacefully together. The lower parts of Nepal is in the most parts Hindu and the higher you go the more Buddhism takes over. Whenever there are many Buddhists you will see prayer flags. Colorful flags with prayers. The wind is supposed to carry the prayers into the world to bless the countryside.

As I said the city is really busy and I won't recommend driving there yourself. Better take a taxi. That truck with "Fragile things inside" is unfortunately only for locals. As the city is also really dusty you should wear a mask if you are near or on the road.

You also shouldn't depend on the reliability of the roads. Traffic jams are normal and things break more often than in the western world. Or at least the consequences are higher. If you need to catch a flight or if you have an appointment, better be early.

Cables everywhere

Electricity or internet is also something that is not as reliable as we might know it. I think most of those issues are true for most parts of India and the neighbor countries as well. This was my first trip in this region and it surprised me that this city with a population with about 2.5 million somehow works.

Next: Driving to the start of the trek.
