What are Muscles?

I've already written 50+ posts and recently got the question: You often talk about muscles, joints, bones, ligaments and nerves, but what are these actually? I will briefly explain what muscles are.

What is a muscle? 
A muscle is a tissue structure that has the property of being able to contract or contract.

There are 2 types of muscles:

Cross-striped muscle tissue
Cross-streaked muscle tissue is mainly found in skeletal muscle. These are the muscles that you can usually contract arbitrarily. Like your biceps

Smooth muscle tissue
Smooth muscle tissue is mainly found around your organs. These are muscles that the body regulates itself and you cannot contract arbitrarily. Think of the gastrointestinal system, reproductive organs, blood vessels or airways.

What is a tendon?
A tendon is the beginning and end of a muscle. A tendon is usually attached to a bone piece. A tendon is also the part of the muscle that does not contract. A tendon has to be tight to set the joint in motion.

What is the function of a muscle? 
A muscle has 1 main function. That is tightening so that a joint can move.

Symptoms of muscle problems

  • Severe shoots of pain with movement, resistance or stretching
  • Radiance in the course of the muscle
  • Pain-free at rest (in certain positions)

Small fact: depending on the sources we have around 600-800 muscles in the human body.
