Just two years ago Akon announced that he wants to build the "most futuristic city in Africa", on 2000 acres of land an innovative, sustainable city where all transactions will be made with the new crypto-currency, the "Akoin".
The Senegalese artist announced on his Twitter page that he has obtained permission to build Akon City, Africa's first cryptocity.
The artist argues that the blockchain can allow Africans to become less dependent on their governments. "I think the blockchain and the crypto currency can be the saviors for Africa in many ways, because they bring power back to the people. The cryptocurrency and blockchain technology offers a more secure currency that allows people in Africa to be independent of government."
Akon is not the only entrepreneur who believes that African nations are ripe for the adoption of digital currencies.
Jack Dorsey, CEO of Twitter and lawyer at Bitcoin, recently returned from a trip to Africa with plans for businesses on the continent. And according to the United Nations, Africa could be the next frontier of cryptocurrency.
In addition, some African governments are already taking steps to embrace blockchain technologies. In Sierra Leone there was the first blockchain vote in the world. In Ghana, the blockchain is used to combat fraud, as it is in Kenya, while in South Africa, the blockchain is used for identity verification.
