Chia network farming equipment vs ethereum mining equipment price, comparison per watt

By Radovan Georgijevic | xchblog | 3 May 2024

In this article I will be comparing farming hard disks prices per watt to the prices of GPU-s per watt, in order to see the difference between them.

Since there are so many GPU-s and HDD-s on the market, I will compare those I personally consider representative in their respective fields and that are available in the market at the time of the article.

Also, I will be focusing only on manufacturer provided specifications, no bios tampering data or any other kind of data originated from the experimentation from the users that as a result has the potential to damage the equipment or to result in the void of the warratny.

  • GPU mining, the Proof of work
  1. GTX 1080Ti, price for the new GPU is 750 euro, the new one is very hard to find on the market, since there is a serious shortage, it uses 250W (source: https://www.nvidia.com/en-sg/geforce/products/10series/geforce-gtx-1080-ti/), so that would make it’s price 750 euro / 250W = 3 euro/W.
    It has a hashrate of 43.5 MH/s.
  2. RTX 3080Ti, price for the new GPU is 3000euro, it uses 350W (source: https://www.nvidia.com/en-eu/geforce/graphics-cards/30-series/rtx-3080-3080ti ), so that would make it’s price 3000 euro / 350W = 8.57 euro/W.
    It has a hashrate of 83.0 MH/s.

    RTX 3080Ti,
  3. AMD 6600XT, price for this GPU is 800 euro, it uses 160W (source: https://www.amd.com/en/products/graphics/amd-radeon-rx-6600-xt), so that would make it’s price 800 euro / 160W = 5 euro/W.
    It has a hashrate of 32.5 MH/s.

    AMD 6600XT AMD 6600XT
  4. AMD 6900XT, price for this GPU is 2500 euro, it consumes 300W of electricity (source: https://www.amd.com/en/products/graphics/amd-radeon-rx-6900-xt), so that would make it’s price 2500 euro / 300W = 8.33 euro/W.
    It has a hashrate of 64 MH/s.

It is well known that GPU power usage is in direct relation with the Hashrate.

With the HDD’s and the Proof of Space consensus the power usage is not in direct relation with the Space, so the price difference between different HDD sizes does not reflect the proper increase in Farming efficiency, therefore this calculation needs to be taken with a bit of doubt as it lacks another variable to make it representative.

I have come to an idea for that to be euro per watt per terabyte.

  1. Toshiba 8TB N300 internal HDD, price for this HDD is 200 euro, it consumes 8,4W of electricity (source: https://www.toshiba-storage.com/products/toshiba-internal-hard-drives-n300/), so that would make it’s price 200 euro / 8.4W = 23.8 euro/W, 23,8 euro/W / 8TB = 2.975 euro/W/TB.

  2. Toshiba 16TB N300 internal HDD, price for this HDD is 800 euro, it consumes 7.5W of electricity (source: https://www.toshiba-storage.com/products/toshiba-internal-hard-drives-n300/), so that would make it’s price 600 euro / 7.5W = 80 euro/W, 80 euro/W / 16TB = 5 euro/W/TB.

  3. Adata HM800 8TB external HDD, price for this HDD is 200 euro, it consumes an average of 12W of electricity (source: https://corp.adata.com/ca/specification/613#), 200 euro / 12W = 16.67 euro/W, 16.67 euro/W / 8TB = 2.084 euro/W/TB. Adata HM800 8TB external HDD Adata HM800 8TB external HDD
