The French central bank has announced the first successful test of the digital euro. According to the Bank of France's announcement on May 20, France became the first country to test the digital euro on a blockchain. The bank says it tested the sale of CBDC digital currency securities on May 14, marking the start of future testing.
Focus on CBDC wholesale
Although the bank's announcement did not elaborate, the current pilot program focuses more on wholesale sales rather than the micro-use of digital euros. CBDC retail is available to regular consumers of Bitcoin or Apple Pay services. CBDC's wholesalers include banks and corporate actors, which the French central bank considers "interbank regulations." A recent Euro-digital issuance of securities issuance test was based on a software received following the bank's March 27 call for applications. According to today's announcement, the bank will conduct similar tests in the coming weeks on other softwares received from the call.
France's efforts to develop the digital euro
Bank of France is known for being active in the development of Euro-digital. Following Britain's secession from the European Union, France will become the second largest economy in the eurozone after Germany.
