Mexican President to Hold Raffle to Cover Cost of Predecessor's Aircraft

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador confirmed that he will hold a raffle to cover the cost of his predecessor's Boeing 787 Dreamliner and raise funds for state-run hospitals. In 2012, a specially-outfitted Dreamliner was purchased at the start of the presidency of former Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, which current President López Obrador, who frequently takes commercial flights to travel across the country, describes as a symbol of government excess.

Initially, President López Obrador wanted to raffle off the plane itself, but has since changed the raffle to give 100 winning ticket holders the equivalent of one million United States dollars each.
Raffle tickets will be sold for 500 Pesos (the equivalent of $26 US) with hopes that the 6 million tickets could raise up to $160 million United States dollars. The winners will be announced on September 15th, 2020.
