Guinea Makes Mask-Wearing Compulsory

In a televised address, Guinea President Alpha Conde stated that in an effort to reduce the transmission of the Covid-19 Coronavirus, the wearing of face masks will be temporarily made compulsory. The new order will come into effect on Saturday, April 18th, 2020.

President Conde announced that offenders of the temporary order will be fined 30,000 Guinean francs, which is the equivalent of just over 3 United States dollars. He also called upon businesses, non-governmental organizations, and government departments to provide employees with masks.

As of now, Guinea has reported 319 confirmed cases of the Covid-19 Coronavirus. Currently, no deaths have been reported and 17 people have recovered. The new compulsory face masks adds to earlier anti-virus measures in the nation including the shutting of borders, ban on large gatherings, closure of schools and religious sites, and implementation of a nighttime curfew.
