Brave - my honest opinion of it

Brave - my honest opinion of it

By DimitarM | Welcome to my life | 18 Jan 2020

This is not a real review. Those are my thoughts of Brave and the almost a year time now while I am using it moderately.

Let me explain what I mean by that. I've started using Brave about year ago I think it was close to the time when I joined Publish0x with my first account here(long story - I am not using that account anymore). When I started here, I decided that I will need a separate browser for Publish0x from my other affairs and till this day, I'm only using Brave to open Publish0x and links from it.

The reason I do not like Brave for my daily driver is the fact that I need my data from my Google account which I use across multiple devices and this is important to me. Brave has this option disabled. Yes it can save your history, cookies and passwords but this is only a local copy, which is not good enough for me.

For a long time Brave team did not enable BAT earning for my country(Bulgaria) via watching adds, which is normal I think. After all we are not in NA or Western Europe and I'm used to it, to receive some things with delay. Once that option was enabled I did not get any adds to watch and respectively I did not earn any BAT. For the past 3 months I received that much from Brave:

As you can see it's not a huge amount. I'll make easily that much on Publish0x with a small article in a day. But that's not my point here - I am seeing occasional pop-up window with paid add, I let it roll for some time and I close it. But there was this one time when for some reason I decided to open Youtube in Brave and I wanted to watch some video, about 5-6 minute long and I was shocked -> Brave Served me 2 adds - first 30 seconds long and second 2 minute. None of them had the option you would normally get to skip them. I had to watch that stuff I did not ask for for nearly 3 minutes before that 6 min long video. After the video ended, there was another video add, again without option to SKIP it. And that was the last time I opened Youtube with Brave.

Anyway, what I also dislike is the way Brave team advertises their product on the back of other browsers - how, Brave is 100% faster and so on. And that is simply not true. I am not saying that Brave is not fast or good browser, but bragging about something without anything to support it is not my kind of thing.

There was this "Browser Benchmark Battle: Chrome Vs. Firefox Vs. Edge Vs. Brave" completed this week and I have read about it online. So let me share with you the results from it. 8 different benchmarks:

SunSpider: Edge wins!
Octane: Chrome wins!
Kraken: Firefox wins!
JetStream: Edge wins!
MotionMark: Edge wins!
Speedometer: Edge wins!
Basemark: Brave wins!
WebXPRT: Firefox wins!

As you can see it's not exactly one-sided competition. I still think Brave is great browser, but there are some stuff for which I prefer to use Chrome.

I'm entirely sure most people will not agree with me, but that is my opinion and I am entitled to have it :)

I hope anyone finds this interesting.
