More Than 90% of Crypto Market Capital Is Now Concentrated in Seven Coins

Capital in the crypto market is piling into fewer and fewer names.

The concentration of money in the largest crypto assets has reached its highest level in five years, according to data from CryptoRank. The broader altcoin market is attracting a much smaller share of capital as investors continue to favor the largest assets.

The seven largest cryptocurrencies now account for 92.1% of the combined market capitalization of the top 100 coins, excluding stablecoins. That brings the concentration of capital back to levels last seen in 2021.

Bitcoin alone accounts for 66.6% of that market in 2026. That's 17% higher than five years ago, and almost 50% above the 44.9% it held back in 2022.

The shift has changed the shape of the market. Growth increasingly depends on a relatively small group of major assets, while the thousands of other cryptocurrencies compete for a much smaller pool of capital.

According to CoinMarketCap, the current top seven, excluding USDT and USDC, are Bitcoin, Ethereum, BNB, XRP, Solana, Tron and Hyperliquid. Together, they have a market capitalization of roughly $2.4 trillion, compared with about $2.63 trillion for the entire crypto market.

The composition of the top 10 is changing as well.

Dogecoin, which spent a long time among the largest cryptocurrencies, has dropped out of the top 10 and been replaced by Zcash. ZEC's recent rise has been closely linked to the launch of a spot ETF, while the Dogecoin ETF is being shut down.

On September 10, Bitwise announced the liquidation of its Dogecoin ETF. The fund had been running for less than a year after launching in late November. Bitwise described the decision as an effort to optimize its product lineup in response to changing investor needs.

Grayscale launched its Zcash ETF in late August. The company said that investor demand had created the right conditions for the fund's launch.

That doesn't necessarily tell us where the market goes next. It does show how different the current market structure has become from the broader altcoin-driven periods of the past.
