The recent EU-level decision about humanitarian immigration

The recent EU-level decision about humanitarian immigration

A new agreement among EU member states to tighten migration rules and impose charges of €20,000 for each migrant a state refuses to accept has faced opposition in Germany. The compromise has disappointed parts of the governing Greens and the SPD. While Germany strongly advocated for the new migration regime, the agreement sparked controversy.

Germany had to make sacrifices in other areas, particularly regarding rapid asylum procedures at the European borders. There has been a revolt within the government, with members of the Green Party and the SPD openly criticizing the compromise. The agreement could lead to further turmoil within the German coalition, especially concerning exceptions for minors and families from the rapid asylum procedures. The German Greens have vowed to fight the decision in upcoming negotiations, and there is a disagreement between the European Parliament and the German coalition on the issue.

The agreement marks a significant step in resolving long-standing disputes over the bloc's immigration and asylum rules. The payments will go into a common EU fund to address the root causes of migration. While the agreement has gained majority support, Poland and Hungary opposed it. The deal includes the establishment of a new system for redistributing migrants, setting quotas for frontline states, and requiring governments to process migrant claims within six months.

The agreement also grants national governments the right to define a 'safe' country for returning failed asylum seekers. Germany expressed disappointment with the compromise, while Italy welcomed the beginning of a new phase. The agreement still needs approval from the European Parliament.
