Europolitics and the EP-elections

Sandro Gozi, a member of Renew Europe, has stated that the party will not ally with the center-right European People's Party (EPP) if it aligns with the proper and extreme-right factions. Gozi emphasized the importance of building a majority with the EPP, socialists, the Greens, and a part of the EU Left after the 2024 EU elections to prevent a polarized European Parliament dominated by extremes. He clarified that Renew Europe does not support a right-wing majority due to differences in values and goals.

Gozi expressed his opposition to an alliance with right-wing and extreme-right parties, stressing that it is incompatible with the nature of the European Union. He highlighted that Renew Europe has nothing in common with those who advocate ethnic replacement or believe that the veto is the best way to ensure national sovereignty.

Renew Europe aims to overcome the traditional right and left divisions and create a governing majority with the EPP, S&D, a part of the EU Left, and the Greens to avoid polarization. The party believes a bipolar system has collapsed in France and is becoming extreme in Italy.

EPP leader Manfred Weber has expressed openness towards collaborating with the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR), which has caused frustration among EU socialists. The ECR believes that a coalition between the EPP, ECR, and liberals is possible and that concessions can be made to form a coalition.

Potential obstacles to an ECR-EPP collaboration include foreign policy matters, as the ECR insists on national vetoes, while the EPP supports majority decision-making. Opposition from German center-right parties and leaders like Emmanuel Macron and Viktor Orbán, who opposed Weber's candidacy for the EU Commission presidency 2019 could also pose challenges.
