The European Central Bank (ECB) is expected to continue raising interest rates in response to persistent inflation in the eurozone. The ECB recently increased the interest rate to 3.5%, the highest level since 2001, marking the eighth consecutive rate hike. ECB President Christine Lagarde indicated that more rate hikes are likely in the future, with inflation expected to remain above the target until the end of 2025.

Meanwhile, the legislative process for the AI Act, which aims to regulate artificial intelligence in the European Union (EU), has reached its final stage. The European Parliament has adopted a position on the law, allowing negotiations to finalize the comprehensive AI legislation. The law focuses on regulating AI applications based on potential harm and enforcing strict regulations for high-risk use cases.

However, there have been disagreements regarding the banning of specific AI applications, particularly in the context of remote biometrics. The German government faces challenges in meeting its ambitious 2030 carbon dioxide reduction target, primarily due to a lack of progress in the transport sector. Germany is behind its target of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 65% compared to 1990 levels.

While progress has been made in the energy and construction sectors, the transport sector is still expected to exceed the emissions ceiling by 118-175 million tons by 2030. Finally, the European Parliament's Environment Committee narrowly approved the EU's Nature Restoration Law to restore Europe's degraded ecosystems. The law survived a rejection attempt by the European People's Party, although the voting process was marked by confusion and chaos. The committee's vote was postponed to June 27, allowing EU member states to agree on a position on the conservation law.
