Far-right parties Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD) and Trikolora in the Czech Republic have signed a memorandum to form a coalition or cooperate ahead of the 2024 European elections. They aim to attract conservative and patriotic voters. The parties joined forces to avoid a scenario similar to the 2021 Czech parliamentary elections, where several smaller right-wing entities ran independently, resulting in split votes and only the SPD crossing the 5% threshold to enter the parliament.
The signed memorandum serves as a basis for uniting patriotic and conservative forces against the governing coalition in the Czech political scene, according to SPD leader Tomio Okamura. In the 2021 elections, the fragmentation of the political spectrum caused over a million votes to be lost, including approximately 250,000 votes for right-wing radical parties like Trikolora, which opposed COVID-19 measures and now promotes pro-Russian narratives. The parties aim to prevent such votes from being wasted again.
Freedom and Direct Democracy is currently the fourth strongest political party in the country, with around 10% support among Czech voters. Trikolora, founded by former members of the governing Civic Democratic Party, receives approximately 2% support. Both parties are Eurosceptic and advocate for leaving the EU. Trikolora has advocated for a mandatory referendum on EU membership with every parliamentary election in the Czech Republic. At the same time, Freedom and Direct Democracy openly support a referendum on leaving the EU.
The Green Party in Germany has decided to support the EU migration deal in upcoming negotiations, provided it improves the European asylum process. The party avoided internal tensions and backed the joint position proposed by its leadership, despite some members' reservations. The Greens emphasized that their approval of legislative acts would depend on how much they enhance the European asylum system and benefit Europe. They argued that their involvement in the negotiations improved the deal and rejected a more critical proposal with clear conditions. The party hopes to advocate for improvements during trialogue negotiations between the Council, European Parliament, and Commission. Key objectives include preventing further restrictions and ensuring that families with children are not held in border camps.
After seven weeks of negotiations, Finland's new right-wing government, comprising the National Coalition Party, the Finns Party, the Swedish People's Party, and the Christian Democrats, has announced its 250-page program with specific emphasis on the country's EU policy. The program reflects a compromise between the pro-EU National Coalition Party and the more critical Finns Party, with the latter having a slight advantage.
The government acknowledges the EU as the most significant political and economic frame of reference, advocating for a stronger global approach. Finland supports additional EU investments, primarily within the budget, while safeguarding national interests. The government calls for a shift from a debt-increasing recovery policy to a sustainable growth policy, highlighting the importance of the no-bailout principle and linking EU budget funding to respect for the rule of law.
Finland opposes the idea of an asymmetric income transfer union and considers the recovery instrument as an exceptional one-time solution, not to be repeated or made permanent. The government prefers prioritizing and reallocating existing EU funds, rather than supporting additional or new EU-level funding instruments. The need for the European Sovereignty Fund will be assessed in relation to state aid policy and the Commission's future proposal.
Although the government aims to strengthen the EU's decision-making ability, it only sees qualified majority voting as feasible in limited areas of foreign and security policy. Given these alignments, EU-related matters are expected to pose challenges for the new Finnish government.
