50 shades of right-wing populism in Europe

Right-wing leaders in the European Union (EU) have supported the consolidation of Spain's far-right party Vox (ECR) in the recent regional and municipal elections. Vox's strong performance has positioned it as a significant force, potentially forming a government with the Partido Popular (EPP) in multiple regions and provincial capitals. European right-wing leaders, including Marine Le Pen, Petr Bystron, and Eric Zemmour, have congratulated Vox and its President Santiago Abascal for their success, highlighting the strengthening of Europe's "patriotic" camp.

However, the conservative governing coalition in Italy, comprising Forza Italia (EPP), Fratelli d'Italia (ECR), and Lega (ID), has stressed the need for unity among right-wing parties in Europe. They advocate for closing ranks within the EPP, ECR, and ID and promoting the "Meloni model," which refers to the leadership of Giorgia Meloni, leader of Fratelli d'Italia. Matteo Salvini of Lega hopes for an alliance that unites the entire right-wing spectrum in Brussels, with Spain's upcoming election results playing a crucial role.

While some German center-right parties express concern and reluctance regarding such alliances, Salvini hopes that Partido Popular will align with Vox in Spain, replicating the success of the right-wing alliance in Italy. The aim is to form a new majority in the European Parliament and the EU Commission, building on conservative-led governments in countries such as Sweden, Finland, Poland, and Hungary.

Although there is a call for unity, there is an acknowledgment that the groups will maintain their distinct identities and specificities. Negotiations and alliances will be considered based on electoral results and common interests while respecting each group's history and competition at the national level. The focus is finding common ground and working together on shared issues in Brussels.
