Under the Great Wave - Keeping a Long-Term Perspective

Under the Wave off Kanagawa

By tych0_21 | Digital Restorations | 31 Jan 2021

Under the Wave off Kanagawa (commonly referred to as The Great Wave / The Wave) is an iconic Japanese woodblock print created by the artist Katsushika Hokusai sometime in the late Edo period between 1830 and 1832. Today it is recognized as one of the recognizable pieces of Japanese artwork in the world.

Self-portrait at the age of eighty-three - Katsushika Hokusai

This particular print was part of larger series of prints created by Hokusai when he was around 70 years old. The collection is known as the Thirty-six Views of Mount Fiji, and it is considered to be his magnum opus. Nestled in the background, and far dwarfed by the imposing "great wave" in the foreground, the snow-capped peak of Mount Fuji watches with ancient and resolute indifference over the chaotic frenzy of the sea and the peril of sailors caught in its wake.

My recreation of this famous piece hopes to emphasize the need for us to keep this perspective of deep-time and our place within it. Hope you enjoy - feedback is appreciated!
