The Fear of Wasting Your Potential

The Fear of Wasting Your Potential

There is also another type of fear that is not generated by the fear of failure. The fear of knowing that you could potentially have done something, yet you haven’t done anything. I believe that this type of fear is always lurking beneath the surface. And while you continue to tell yourself that you have all the time in the world left and you will finally take care of everything in the future, many months pass and you finally come to realize that you’ve been procrastinating all the way along.

The waste of your potential doesn’t necessarily imply idleness. Sometimes it is manifested through constant distractions, seeking out comfort instead of development or being too afraid of making the wrong choice. And while you might be busy every single day, you can still find yourself in a dead-end spot.

And that feeling is rather demotivating since you know that you have more in you, but capability means nothing without action.

I do not think that everyone has to be the most successful version of themselves all the time; otherwise, that would be a new form of pressure. We do not have to rush into becoming someone before our time because our potential does not have an expiration date.

For me, the real question is whether or not I am making use of my potential rather than dreaming of how I should become. It does not take much to change a life if only a little progress is made in each step of it. It could be learning something, completing something, retrying something after failing, or just doing something rather than always planning to do it.

The biggest mistake could be not taking a chance to know the things that you could have accomplished.

It is not necessary to make use of all the chances flawlessly; it is only necessary to stop waiting for a perfect self to start.
