Salento (in the Salento language Salentu, in Tarantino: Salènde, in Greek Σαλέντο Salénto), also known as the Salento peninsula, is a subregion of southern Puglia, between the Ionian Sea to the west and the Adriatic Sea to the east. Figuratively it constitutes the heel of the Italian boot.

The inhabitants of the area, which includes the entire province of Lecce, almost all of Brindisi and the eastern part of Taranto, are distinguished above all by glottological characteristics compared to the rest of Puglia. From a legal point of view, Salento within the Kingdom of Naples, later the Kingdom of the two Sicilies, has almost perfectly coincided with the territorial district called Terra d'Otranto, which has survived administrative reforms for centuries.

Gallìpoli (AFI: / ɡalˈlipoli /, Καḍḍίπουλη, transliterated Caddhipuli in Gallipoli dialect and in Greek-Salento), known as the pearl of the Ionian Sea,is an Italian town of 20 259 inhabitants in the province of Lecce in Puglia.

The city, a bishopric since the 6th century AD, is located along the western coast of Salento, stretched out over the Ionian Sea, and is divided into two distinct areas: the historic center, which stands on a limestone island and has a circuit of about 1.5 km, and the new village, connected to the island by a brick bridge dating back to the 17th century, which began to form in 1837 on an area greater than that of the whole island. To the west of Gallipoli rise the island of Campo, the islet called de "Li picciuni" and the island of Sant'Andrea which, completely flat, extends for about 50 hectares.

From the 16th century it became the main square in Europe for the production and export of lampante oil, so much so that on the London Stock Exchange the price of the oil was established on the basis of the Gallipoli quotations.

It was the capital of the district from 1860 to 1927, sottointsndeza from 2015 presiding over the conference of the historic cities of the Mediterranean. 

Gallipoli, together with other municipalities of Salento, for the historical importance of religious and civil architecture of the Baroque era, has been included in the provisional list of UNESCO pending possible recognition as a World Heritage Site.
