Cilento is a mountainous area of ​​Campania located in the province of Salerno, in the southern part of the region, and declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Together with the Vallo di Diano in the past it was part of the Citiore Principality also called "western Lucania".

Until the creation of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, the Cilento territory was identified among the countries at the foot of Monte della Stella (1131 m), that is, part of the Barony of Cilento of the main branch of the Sanseverino, then Princes of Salerno, cis - Alentum on this side of the Alento river but seen from the capital Naples; then at the end of the 19th century the toponym attracted the area of ​​the former barony of Novi (Vallo della Lucania and bordering) east of the River, therefore that area is distinguished from the entire national park and takes the name of "Ancient Cilento". objective we wanted to extend Cilento to a good part of the coastal and internal southern province of Salerno. In ancient times Cilento was part of Lucania (together with Vallo di Diano and the Gulf of Policastro). This has remained a sign in the dialect with its accents spoken in the villages on the slopes of Monte Stella such as Omignano, Stella Cilento, Sessa Cilento, in the gastronomic traditions and toponymy (Vallo della Lucania, Atena Lucana).

CAPO PALINURO

Capo Palinuro is one of those places that have always fascinated travelers of all ages, to the point that Virgil himself has reserved a quote to him in the Aeneid. The sea is crystal clear. The wide and sandy beaches alternate with rocky stretches accessible only by sea which hide real natural jewels such as the beach of Good Sleep or suggestive caves. At least the Natural Arch beach and the nearby Mingardo beach are worth a visit, where you can rent pedal boats to discover places otherwise inaccessible.

This enchanting landscape has been chosen several times as the location for famous films and there is no shortage of typical restaurants where you can taste the typical Cilento cuisine and excellent dishes based on fresh fish. In order to visit the main caves in the area - the most famous is the Blue Grotto, but the Grotta del Sangue and that of the Monks must also be visited - boat tours can be made by contacting local operators; at the port it is possible to view the departure times, the duration of the excursions and the relative costs.

Capo Palinuro is a rocky promontory on the coast of Southern Campania, between the gulf of Velia and that of Policastro, in the Cilento in the Province of Salerno. It goes for about 2 km into the Tyrrhenian sea, west of the mouth of the Lambro and Mingardo rivers. Capo Palinuro weather station is located there.
Its territory falls within the Palinuro district of the municipality of Centola.

It is an important tourist resort, famous for the landscape beauties related to the sea and its hinterland and for the historical and literary reminiscences linked to its name.

MARINA DI CAMEROTA

Marina di Camerota, nestled between rocky promontories overlooking the sea, at the foot of hills dotted with ancient defensive towers and extensive centuries-old olive groves, is the most populous fraction of the Municipality of Camerota. Marina is one of the most popular destinations in Cilento, preferred by seaside tourism for the beauty of the beaches (certified with the five sails of Legambiente and Touring in 2001 and 2015) and for the crystal clear sea, so much so that for decades the Touring has been present with its splendid tourist village.
 
The coast is jagged, full of natural caves carved into the rock on the water's surface, and here and there there are sandy beaches that seem to arrive straight from the tropics; the largest and best equipped beaches are right in the town center. The beaches of Marina are numerous (some have been locations of films such as Argonuati 2 and the recent Wonder woman): the beach of S. Domenico, is located between the historic center and the port, with fine white sand, is lapped by the turquoise waters of a crystal clear sea, on which free stretches and bathing establishments alternate; Lentiscelle beach is located on the southern border of the town: it alternates stretches organized with a free beach, most of which are on a golden sandy beach mixed with gravel; Calanca beach is a few minutes walk from the town center and is accessed via a staircase with steps that ends on the only stretch of free beach: off the coast stands the island of the Sirens, guarded by the Calanca tower, right in front; finally, the northernmost beach, in part the responsibility of the Touring village, is Cala d'Arconte.

Marina di Camerota (Marina re Cammarota in Cilento) is the most populous center (3 500 inhabitants) of the municipality of Camerota, in the province of Salerno, in the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park.

The Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni national park is a national park established in 1991, while in 1995 the organization for its management was established. The protected natural area of ​​about 36 000 hectares, entirely included in the province of Salerno, was subsequently extended to bring its surface to 181 048 hectares, corresponding today to the southern part of the province, between the Sele plain to the north, Basilicata to the east and south and the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west. It includes, in whole or in part, the territories of 8 mountain communities and 80 municipalities. Since 1998 it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site (with the archaeological sites of Paestum and Velia and the Certosa di Padula), since 1997 it has been a Biosphere Reserve and since 2010 it has been the first Italian national park to become a Geopark. in Vallo della Lucania.

Vallo di Diano (also in the Valdiano form) is a fertile basin, whose wide flat band of valley floor is located between 450 and 480 m above sea level, in the south of the Campania region on the border with Basilicata, part of the historical region of Lucania.

It is made up of 15 municipalities in the province of Salerno and has 60,319 inhabitants.

The Alburni Mountains are a karst mountain massif of the Lucanian Apennines, located between the Sele and Tanagro valleys. For their morphology rich in sinkholes, caves, cavities and sinkholes, especially from the western side (e.g. from the Piana del Sele), they are known as the Bell Dolomites.
