Three lakes of different colors

The Kelimutu volcano is located near the village of Moni on the island of Flores. It is not the volcano itself that makes tourists trek to the top, but the three amazing lakes located there.

Niedaleko miejscowości Moni na wyspie Flores znajduje się wulkan Kelimutu. Nie sam wulkan jest powodem wędrówek turystów na sam szczyt, ale trzy niesamowite znajdujące się tam jeziora.

The amazing thing about these lakes is that they periodically change colors, and it is not entirely clear why and when they will. One day we are worlds with a color palette from green to turquoise, and in a few days the lakes are red to brown.

Na tym właśnie polega ich piękno. Podobno jest to największa atrakcja Indonezji, a na pewno wyspy Flores. Co roku zjeżdżają tam tłumy turystów, aby ujrzeć to niesamowite zjawisko

Of course, you need to be lucky, because the volcano is located at an altitude of 1690 m above sea level. and unfortunately you may not hit the good weather conditions. The route to the volcano is not too demanding to overcome for a healthy tourist, the more so that a large part of the route can be traveled by car, and the rest is well marked and even paved in places.

Trzeba mieć oczywiście trochę szczęścia, ponieważ wulkan leży na wysokości 1690 m n.p.m. i niestety można nie trafić w dobre warunki pogodowe. Trasa na wulkan nie jest zbytnio wymagająca, do pokonania dla zdrowego turysty, tym bardziej że sporą część trasy możemy przebyć samochodem, a reszta jest dobrze oznakowana, a nawet miejscami wybrukowana.

Tiwu Ata Mbupu, which means "lake of old people". it is the most western. It is 67 m deep and 4.5 ha in area, while its mirror is at an altitude of 1,354.3 m above sea level.

Another lake called Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai lies in the middle, and in the local language the name means "lake of boys and girls". Its water surface is at an altitude of 1,394.4 m above sea level. It is about 127 m deep and has an area of almost 5.5 hectares.

Kolejne jezioro o nazwie Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai leży pośrodku, a w języku miejscowym nazwa oznacza „jezioro chłopców i dziewcząt”. Jego lustro wody jest na wysokości 1394,4 m n.p.m. Ma głębokość około 127 m i prawie 5,5 hektara powierzchni.

And the last, smallest lake is located in the east of the volcano, and it is called Tiwu Ata Polo, which in Indonesian means "lake of evil spirits". It is 64 m deep, 4 hectares of area, and its mirror is at an altitude of 1,381.5 m above sea level.

I ostatnie najmniejsze jezioro położone jest wschodzie wulkanu, a nazywa się Tiwu Ata Polo, co oznacza po indonezyjsku „jezioro złych duchów”. Ma 64 m głębokości, 4 hektary powierzchni, a jego lustro mieści się na wysokości 1381,5 m n.p.m.

The water temperature in these lakes is relatively low and ranges from 20 to 30 degrees Celsius, but diving without proper equipment is practically impossible. Water, like most volcanic lakes, is the entire Mendeleev table with a predominance of acids, sulfates and chlorine.

Temperatura wody w tych jeziorach jest stosunkowo niska i waha się od 20 do 30 stopni Celsjusza, niemniej nurkowanie bez odpowiedniego sprzętu jest praktycznie niemożliwe. Woda, jak większość wulkanicznych jezior, to cała tablica Mendelejewa z przewagą kwasów, siarczanów i chloru.

Kelimutu in Indonesian means "boiling lake" because there are underwater fumaroles, which are small underwater volcanoes, from which volcanic gases such as hydrogen chloride, water vapor and sulfur dioxide are released.

Kelimutu po Indonezyjsku oznacza „wrzące jezioro” ponieważ znajdują się tam podwodne fumarole, czyli takie małe podwodne wulkaniki, z których wydostają się gazy wulkaniczne, jak chlorowodór, para wodna i dwutlenek siarki.

Geologists are not able to fully explain this brilliant natural phenomenon. It is suspected that it is the variety of gases and the multitude of chemicals that cause the Kelimutu lakes to change color in an unpredictable way. Sometimes they are blue, green, black, and sometimes they are white, red or brown. But that is their charm.

Geologowie nie do końca potrafią wyjaśnić zachodzenie tego genialnego zjawiska przyrodniczego. Podejrzewa się, że to różnorodność gazów i mnogość związków chemicznych powoduje, że w nieprzewidywalny sposób jeziora Kelimutu zmieniają kolor. Raz są błękitne, zielone, czarne, a raz białe, czerwone czy brązowe. Ale to jest cały ich urok.

Kelimutu volcano has been inactive for many years, it is said to be in a dormant state. The last recorded eruptions of this volcano took place in 1869-1870 so it is open to tourists
