The Horizon Bridge to the Harmony blockchain was hacked, now the Harmony team offers a reward if the funds are returned

Last week it was reported that the Horizon Bridge was hacked and 100M was stolen during the hack. Now they offer a reward to the hacker iif the money is returned...

Harmony offers a whopping 1M bounty

The Harmony team is offering a 1M bounty to anyone who can return the funds. They also say they will "advocate for no criminal charges" when the funds are returned.

1 million is a lot of money, but is it really? Well, the answer is it is and it isn't. In this case, the amount is only 1% of the funds that were stolen in the hack. And that is not a very enticing amount. If I only look at where I live in Sweden, we have a general finders fee of 10%. Of course, that is not set in stone or anything like that. It is more of an unspoken thing. And I assume most places have a similar thing in place, that or you are just expected to do the right thing because it is the right thing.

To me, the 1% looks more like an insult than an actual reward. If we look at two other hacks that have occurred this year, they offered 12.5% respectively 10% of the stolen funds in reward. And to say the least this did not sit very well with the crypto community:

As can clearly be seen here in a tweet by @DegenSpartan. And I can not really fault their opinion. As I also think it is more akin to a slap in the face than an attempt to get the money back.

Maybe they are trying to bait the hacker into repeating the attack and catch them that way? Or they just have some obligation to fulfill with their insurancecompany. A more likely scenario.

What do you think about this whole mess, is it a serious attempt to retrieve the money, or are they just covering their legal bases? Please share your thoughts on this in the comment section down below.
