"Whenever I tell people I don‘t want to be a team lead, they look at me like I‘ve said something strange.

'But you‘re a good developer. You‘d be a great leader!'

Maybe. But I don‘t want to.

Here‘s why."

1. I Love Coding More Than Managing

I didn‘t become a developer to manage people. I became a developer because I love building things.

I love solving problems with code. I love learning new technologies. I love getting into the flow of writing something that works.

As a team lead, I‘d spend most of my time in meetings, not in code. That‘s not what I signed up for.

2. Leadership Is a Different Skillset

Being a good developer doesn‘t automatically make you a good leader.

Leading a team requires empathy, communication, conflict resolution, and delegation. These are valuable skills — but they‘re not the same as writing clean code.

I respect people who are great at both. I just know where my passion lies.

3. I Don‘t Want to Be Responsible for Other People‘s Work

When you‘re a team lead, you‘re responsible for your team‘s output. Their mistakes become your mistakes. Their delays become your delays.

I don‘t want that pressure. I want to be accountable for my own work — not for the work of 5 other people.

4. The 'Promotion' Is Not Always a Promotion

In many companies, the only way to earn more money is to move into management.

But that‘s not a 'promotion' — it‘s a career change.

You stop doing the thing you love and start doing something completely different. And you might not even be good at it.

5. There Are Other Paths

I don‘t have to become a team lead to grow.

I can become a senior developer, a staff engineer, or a technical expert. I can mentor juniors without managing them. I can lead projects without leading people.

The 'lead' title is not the only way to succeed.

"Not everyone wants to be a leader. And that‘s okay.

The world needs great individual contributors just as much as it needs great managers.

If you love coding, keep coding. Don‘t let anyone make you feel like you have to lead just because you‘re good at what you do."
